PSP Calibration/Trainings
Anyone can view the courses, but only individuals that meet the PSP Volunteer requirements are allowed to conduct the oral health reviews. The requirements are listed under the PSP Volunteer Information section on this webpage.
- Reviewer Training for Dental and Medical Professionals – Must watch yearly.
- Reviewer Training Quiz and Certificate – Complete after watching the Reviewer Training for Dental Professionals above. Large groups can watch the training session, but all participants must complete the registration form individually.
- Reviewer Training for Non-Dental Professions – Created and presented by Dr. Vick at Kansas City University, College of Dental Medicine. We recommend watching sections 4, 5 and 6. The full video is about 1 hour.
- Fluoride Varnish Training (18 and older) – Must watch yearly to apply fluoride varnish to participating children in PSP.
- Fluoride Varnish Training Quiz and Certificate – Complete after watching the Fluoride Varnish Training (18 and older) above.

PSP Volunteer Information
Reviewers – Dental and Medical Professionals
The individuals listed below, who complete the annual online Reviewer Training for Dental and Medical Professionals, pass the quiz and complete the registration form may conduct PSP oral health reviews.
- Dentists.
- Dental Students (Competency as determined by faculty of respective dental school, typically third- and fourth-year students).
- Dental Hygienists.
- Dental Hygiene Students (Competency as determined by faculty of respective dental hygiene program, typically second year students).
- Dental Assistants (Certified Dental Assistant or have passed the Missouri Dental Assisting Basic Skills exam and/or a minimum of two years chairside experience).
- Licensed Medical Professionals (i.e., Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, etc.).
- Medical Professional Students (Competency as determined by faculty of respective medical or nursing program).
Fluoride Varnish Application and Community Volunteers
Individuals that are 18 years or older, including high school students who are 18 years old, parents, grandparents, PTO/PTA members, or school staff can volunteer:
- Apply fluoride varnish: individuals listed above, who complete the online Fluoride Varnish Training (18 and older), pass the quiz and complete registration form yearly may apply the varnish.
- Record information for the oral health reviewers.
- Assist with the oral health education component of PSP (curriculum and materials provide).
- Escort children to the event and back to classrooms and monitor children at event.
- Assist with the distribution of materials (toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.).
Time Commitment
No two PSP events are the same. The time commitment for volunteers may be a few hours, or it may be most of the school day.
The number of volunteers will also determine the length of the time commitment each volunteer will help with your event.
