What is a Heart Attack?
A heart attack can happen when the heart's blood supply is reduced or blocked, usually due to buildup of plaque in the arteries. The longer it takes to get medical treatment to restore blood flow, the more the heart is damaged. This damage can cause irregular heart rhythms or the heart to suddenly stop beating, which can lead to death.
Risk factors for heart attack include:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Diabetes or high blood sugar
- Obesity or being overweight
- Not getting enough physical activity
- Family history of heart disease
- Smoking or drinking too much alcohol
- Breathing air pollution over time
