The Silver Haired Legislature (SHL) is a volunteer, non-partisan advocacy group for citizens 60 and older. Elected from regional areas, members meet annually in Jefferson City to draft, debate and advocate for priority bills supporting older
The assembly consists of 150 members (120 representatives and 30 senators). Local elections are held annually at local senior centers to elect three senators and 12 representatives from each of the 10 Area Agencies on Aging.
Delegates meet in the fall at the State Capitol in Jefferson City to conduct a model legislative session, where they debate and vote on proposed policies. They choose the five most important bills to work on for the next year.
SHL members also meet at the Capitol in Jefferson City on the last Wednesday in January to meet with lawmakers about their goals and accomplishments.
