Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are healthcare facilities where patients can have same‑day surgery without staying overnight in a hospital. In Missouri, these centers are licensed and overseen by the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) to help ensure safe, quality care. Many ASCs also meet federal requirements so they can serve patients covered by Medicare. Some facilities that offer similar services may choose to be licensed as birthing centers instead, following Missouri’s specific standards for maternity care. The Bureau of Ambulatory Care (BAC) under DHSS regularly inspects these facilities, reviews patient-care practices, and investigates any complaints to help protect patient safety. The BAC also works with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to manage the federal ASC program within Missouri.
