Caregivers are the main support for many older adults and people with disabilities. More than 53 million people in the United States care for a family member without being paid. The value of this care is over $600 billion. These caregivers play an important role, but they are often not recognized or appreciated as much as they should be.
Caregivers help in many important ways, including:
- Personal care like bathing, dressing, using the bathroom, moving safely and preparing meals.
- Medical tasks such as organizing medicines, going to appointments, keeping track of medical information and helping with basic health needs.
- Everyday tasks like shopping, providing or arranging rides, paying bills, cleaning and taking care of the home.
Supports caregivers of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias across Missouri through education, respite care and assistive technology services.
Recognizing Missouri’s Unpaid Caregivers
Do you know someone who puts their life on hold to care for an ill family member or friend? If so, the Department of Health and Senior Services invites you to nominate these unsung heroes to be recognized. Throughout the year we will post inspirational stories of these selfless caregivers.
