Measles
Brief Description
Laboratory Unit
Methodology
Specimen Collection
Storage/Transport
Specimens should be stored refrigerated (2-8°C). Send immediately to MSPHL on freezer packs. If specimens will not arrive at the MSPHL within 10 days of collection, specimens should be stored frozen (≤-20°C) and shipped on dry ice.
Acceptable Specimen Type(s)
Detection of measles virus is most sensitive when respiratory specimens are collected within the first 3 days of rash onset. If unable to collect a respiratory specimen within 72 hours of onset, urine specimens may be collected in addition to respiratory specimens. Collection of a respiratory specimen along with a urine sample may improve test sensitivity, especially when collecting toward the end of the RT-PCR collection window.
If collected within 72 hours of symptom onset collect one of the following:
- Throat Swab
- Nasopharyngeal Swab
If collected between 4-10 days of symptom onset, collect both of the following:
- A respiratory sample (either throat or nasopharyngeal swab)
- Urine Sample
