ShowMeVax supports bi-directional interfaces and fully integrates with electronic health record systems; to meet and stay current with national immunization information standards; to operate using any current web browsers and devices; and to improve user report capabilities.

Missouri follows National Standards for Electronic Health Record (EHR) reporting.

If you are:

  • A provider/clinic who orders vaccines from the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program or reports immunizations administered to children ages 0 through 18, you are encouraged to apply for electronic data exchange with ShowMeVax.
  • Any other provider who administers vaccinations in Missouri, you are also encouraged to apply for electronic data exchange with ShowMeVax.
  • A pharmacy operating in Missouri, is required to report vaccination administration to ShowMeVax as outlined in Chapter 338.010, RSMo.

HL7 Electronic Data Exchange (EDX)

An interface with ShowMeVax can be established for a single clinic (regardless of size) or an organization representing multiple clinics that will report through a single interface. The interface can be set up as unidirectional or bidirectional:

  • Unidirectional data is exchanged in one direction, from the EHR to the IIS. Data exchanged refers to Message Submission (VXU) and Acknowledgment (ACK).
  • Bidirectional data is exchanged in two directions, from the EHR to the IIS and from the IIS to the EHR. Data exchanged refers to Query (QBP) HL7 message submissions that are sent to an IIS and Response (RSP) HL7 message submissions that are returned by an IIS in response to a querying system.

Getting Started

Step 1 - Registration
Step 2 - Testing
Step 3 - Production

Registration

To begin the registration and onboarding process, click the survey link below.  Upon completion of the survey, you will be contacted by a member of the Electronic Data Exchange team.

Testing

Once registration is completed, the EDX team will assign facility ID numbers and will email you your system credentials to begin the testing process. During the two-week submission period the following phases will occur:

  • Phase 1: Confirm that ShowMeVax can accept test messages (VXU and QBP) from your EHR System.
  • Phase 2: Missouri EDX requires a minimum of 90% threshold on data quality when validating messages from your EHR.  Please ensure that the required fields are populated with proper coding.
  • Phase 3: Assess data quality of message content to ensure accurate patient data has been sent as outlined in the HL7 implementation guide.

The Missouri EDX team requests that “Actual" patient immunization data (Production Data) be submitted in real-time from your EHR system to the ShowMeVax QA (Test) environment to test the interface connection and message data quality. Acknowledgment (ACK) messages will be returned to your EHR system. You should monitor the ACKs and take action to correct submissions as needed until errors no longer occur.

Production

When you’ve achieved the minimum data quality threshold, the Missouri EDX team will approve you to begin submitting messages to the production environment of ShowMeVax.

Once you are actively exchanging data with ShowMeVax, you must continue to review the ACK messages to ensure ongoing submission and data quality. Failed submissions and error messages should be corrected and resubmitted to ShowMeVax.
