Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Confirms Active TB Case at Westminster College

Jefferson City, Mo. - The Missouri State Public Health Laboratory today confirmed a case of active tuberculosis (TB) in a student at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. In response, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is working with college and local public health officials to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

The student who tested positive for TB has been isolated from other students since September 28, when a preliminary test indicated possible TB. TB can only be transmitted between persons by coughing, sneezing, and prolonged exposure. DHSS has been working with Westminster and the Callaway County Health Department to identify students, faculty, and staff who may have been exposed. Westminster will be contacting those individuals and will then, in connection with the local health department, provide testing for those students. DHSS will assist as needed in that process, and will provide laboratory confirmation of any suspected cases as requested by local health providers.
