The Santa Barbara Smokehouse Inc Voluntary Recall Because of Possible Health Risk

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services received information regarding a recall for cold-smoked salmon produced by Santa Barbara Inc., CA. This voluntary recall is for brands and batches of cold-smoked salmon produced and packed between Dec. 17 and Dec. 24, 2014 as a result of potential Listeria Monocytogenes contamination. Listeria Monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Though healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this incident.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes on food contact surfaces.

The production of the product has been voluntarily suspended while CDPH and the company continue to investigate the source of the incident.
