Organ Donation Advisory Committee Application
Introduction
Overview
The Organ Donation Advisory Committee is a group of 10 members consisting of representatives from the community and organizations focused on organ, eye and tissue donation. The Director of the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) appoints members to the committee. Applicants must be Missouri residents and have a connection (e.g., personal, family member, work) to organ, eye and tissue donation. Appointments may be staggered to assure continuity. When a vacancy occurs, a review of applications happens. Consideration for appointment includes experience, expertise and geographic location.
The advisory committee typically meets quarterly for three to four hours, however at a minimum, twice per year. The meeting dates are determined near the end of one calendar year for the following calendar year. Members are expected to attend at least 50 percent of scheduled meetings annually.
Purpose
The advisory committee shall:
- Assist the DHSS and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the development of organ donor awareness programs to educate the public on the importance of organ donation.
- Recommend priorities for expenditures from the Organ Donor Program Fund.
- Submit a report of its activities and recommendations to the DHSS director, the general assembly and the governor by the 15th day of January of each year.
Additionally, the DHSS requests committee members:
- Alert DHSS Organ and Tissue Donor Program of any issues of concern or advancements in the field of organ, eye and tissue donation.
- Review and provide feedback on issues pertaining to organ, eye and tissue donation, as requested.
- Contribute to planning and developing projects and educational products related to organ, eye and tissue donation.
- Participate in organ, eye and tissue donation local and statewide events at least twice a year.
- Promote and encourage Missouri residents to learn about and register as organ, eye, and tissue donors in the Donate Life Missouri registry (DonateLifeMissouri.org).
