Resident numbers are shown and the rate is per 1,000 resident pregnancies (i.e. live births plus fetal deaths plus induced abortions). The rate of all indicators will also take into account any filters or demographic selections (such as race, age, ethnicity, etc.).

Live Births

Live birth is defined by statute (Chapter 193, RSMo) as the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a child, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy, which after such expulsion or extraction, breathes or shows any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached. The definition is also irrespective of birth weight.

Fetal Deaths

Spontaneous deaths in utero at 20 weeks or more gestation or with a delivery weight of at least 350 grams. Rate is per 1,000 resident pregnancies (live births plus fetal deaths plus abortions) for the same time period.

Total Deliveries

Resident live births plus fetal deaths. The rate is per 1,000 resident pregnancies (i.e. live births plus fetal deaths plus induced abortions).

Abortions

Abortion is defined by statute (Chapter 188, RSMo) as the intentional destruction of the life of an embryo or fetus in his or her mother's womb or the intentional termination of the pregnancy of a mother with an intention other than to increase the probability of a live birth or to remove a dead or dying unborn child. The rate is resident abortions per 1,000 resident pregnancies.
