The Chronic Disease Death MICA is a subset of the Death MICA, with causes chosen and arranged for convenience in studying the burden of chronic diseases on Missouri residents. Two differences in arrangement are that Asthma, a subset of chronic lower respiratory diseases, is listed separately here, and that Aortic aneurysm/dissection, a “Major Item” in the Death MICA, is grouped with “Other cardiovascular/circulatory conditions” here.

This MICA does not include all chronic conditions. The focus is on conditions which cause a large number of deaths and those most subject to prevention efforts.

As in the Death MICA, the grouping of diagnoses and events into cause categories is based on specifications from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). The specifications are published in "Deaths: Final Data for 2014," National Vital Statistics Reports, vol. 65 no.4. National Center for Health Statistics, 2016 and in annual updates.

The twelve causes at the left margin in the table below are “Major Items” in the Chronic Disease Death MICA's “Choose Your Data” section. The indented causes are the “Intermediate Items” within the wider categories; to see them, click on the plus sign next to the corresponding “Major Item.”

NOTE: Codes given as three digits below include all possible four-digit values within them.

For example, "G30" includes G30 and G30.0 through G30.9.

Cause of Death ICD-10 code(s) Notes

Alzheimer’s disease

J45 - J46

Malignant neoplasms of lip, oral cavity and pharynx

C00 - C14

Malignant neoplasm of esophagus

Malignant neoplasm of stomach

Malignant neoplasms of colon, rectum and anus

C18 - C21

This NCHS category differs from SEER’s in that it includes anal cancers (C21) and excludes those of unspecified intestinal tract (C26.0).

Malignant neoplasms of liver / intrahepatic bile ducts

Malignant neoplasm of pancreas

Malignant neoplasm of larynx

Malignant neoplasms of trachea, bronchus and lung

C33 - C34

The SEER definition of “lung cancer” excludes trachea (C33), so may include slightly fewer deaths than this NCHS-based category.

Malignant melanoma of skin

Malignant neoplasm of breast

Malignant neoplasm of cervix uteri

Malignant neoplasms of corpus uteri and uterus, part unspecified

C54 - C55

Malignant neoplasm of ovary

Malignant neoplasm of prostate

Malignant neoplasms of kidney and renal pelvis

C64 - C65

Malignant neoplasm of bladder

Malignant neoplasms of meninges, brain and other parts of central nervous system

C70 - C72

Hodgkin's disease

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

C82 - C85

C91 - C95

Multiple myeloma and immunoproliferative neoplasms

Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases)

I60 - I69

Chronic liver disease & cirrhosis

K70, K73 - K74

Alcoholic liver disease

Other chronic liver disease and cirrhosis

K73 - K74

Most of these are unspecified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) excluding Asthma

J40 – J47

Bronchitis, chronic and unspecified

J40 - J42

Other chronic lower respiratory diseases

J44, J47

Most of these are unspecified chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

E10 - E14

Essential hypertension

I10, I12, I15

Heart disease

I00 - I09, I11, I13,
I20 - I51

Acute rheumatic fever and chronic rheumatic heart diseases

I00 - I09

Hypertensive heart disease

Hypertensive heart and renal disease

Acute myocardial infarction

I21 - I22

These four categories together constitute
“Ischemic heart disease.”

Other acute ischemic heart diseases

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, so described

All other forms of chronic ischemic heart disease

I20, I25.1-125.9

Acute and subacute endocarditis

Diseases of pericardium and acute myocarditis

I30 - I31, I40

Heart failure

All other forms of heart disease

I26 - I28, I34 - I38,

N25 - N27

Acute nephritic / nephrotic syndrome

N00 - N01, N04

Chronic / unspecified nephritis and renal sclerosis

N02 - N03, N05 - N07, N26

Renal failure

N17 - N19

Other disorders of kidney

N25, N27

This category does not contain all the kidney diseases which are not in any of the specific kidney groups; about 44 Missouri resident deaths per year are due to kidney diseases not in one of the "kidney" groupings.

Other cardiovascular/circulatory conditions

I71 - I78, I80 - I99

Aortic aneurysm and dissection

Other diseases of arteries, arterioles and capillaries

I72 - I78

Most of these deaths are due to peripheral vascular disease.

Other disorders of circulatory system

I80 - I99

These causes, while circulatory, are not considered “major cardiovascular disease.” Most of the deaths in this category are due to deep vein thrombosis.
