The Newborn Screening Laboratory Report Access Portal

What are the benefits?

  1. It will provide a secure website for hospitals and Physicians to check on the status of newborn screening (NBS) samples that they have sent, to view the results as soon as they are released, to save NBS lab reports electronically as a pdf file if they wish, and to print out the lab reports at that time or any time after that. It will allow them to conduct NBS result inquiries when it is convenient for them and not be limited to State Lab office hours.
  2. It will improve turn-around-time by eliminating the lag time encountered due to the printing of lab reports, stuffing of envelopes by clerical staff, waiting on the departmental mail, and then waiting on US mail delivery time. Sometimes additional delays in receiving lab reports can occur due to printer malfunctions, staff shortages or holidays.
  3. It should reduce the number and need for phone call requests for NBS results into the State Lab. Even though the results may have already been released and are in transit to the submitters, a large amount of phone calls are received by the State Lab requesting NBS results, including requests for the faxing of those test results.
  4. It will allow pediatricians to view and print their patient’s NBS results even when their name was left off of the NBS patient form as the physician of record. Having this secure portal should eliminate the extra steps that must be taken when they were not stated as the physician of record, but truly are caring for the child.
  5. It could allow Emergency Room doctors to view NBS results on sick babies in an emergency situation. This is a very important feature that can help the ER doctors rule out the genetic/metabolic disorders that the State Lab screens while they are conducting clinical assessments on the child in the ER when time is very critical.
  6. The NBS Access Portal reports are 100% identical to the NBS lab reports that are mailed.
  7. All of the above will help to improve customer service, reduce State Lab staff time waste and help to maintain the newborn screening fee at a reasonable rate.
