The Prenatal Substance Use Prevention (PSUP) Program helps people learn how alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, opioids, and other drugs can affect pregnancy. We connect families with treatment, support, and community services. We also provide free tools and education for health care providers and community partners.

How Substance Use Can Affect Your Baby
Using alcohol, tobacco, nicotine products, opioids, or other drugs during pregnancy can affect your baby’s health.
It can increase the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, low birth weight, breathing problems, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. If you use alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, or other drugs, talk with your health care provider. Help is available.

For Communities
Educational Manikin Program
The Prenatal Substance Use Prevention Program coordinates Missouri's statewide educational manikin program.
Realistic infant manikins help people better understand how alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, opioids, and other drugs can affect a baby's health during pregnancy. Participants compare a healthy infant with infants affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FAS) and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS/NOWS).
The manikins can be used for:
- Community events
- Health fairs
- Professional education
- School and college programs
- Parent education
Get Involved
Whether you need educational tools for a single event or want to provide ongoing education in your community, we can help.
You can:
- Borrow a manikin set for an event or training
- Request a presentation from the PSUP Program.
- Become a community education partner by hosting educational manikins for your organization and sharing them with other community partners. Community education partners receive two sets of educational manikins, one for their own education and outreach activities and one to share with other organizations in their community. This helps expand access to pregnancy education across Missouri.
