WIC card customer service number: 866-248-7553 (TTY)
This toll-free number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Add this number as a contact in your phone so you have it if needed.

Protecting your WIC card and PIN

PIN stands for Personal Identification Number, a four-digit secret code that allows only you to use your WIC card.

DO:

  • Select your PIN when you get your card by calling customer service.
  • Choose four numbers that are easy for you to remember but hard for someone else to guess.
  • Protect your PIN! If someone knows your PIN, they can use your card to get your WIC food, and that food will not be replaced. If someone finds out your PIN, call customer service to change it.
  • If you enter the wrong PIN, you have three more chances to enter the correct number. The card will lock on the fourth incorrect PIN entry. You may reset your PIN immediately or the card will unlock automatically at 12:01 a.m. Central Standard Time the next day.

DO NOT:

  • Write your PIN on your card or keep it in your wallet or purse.
  • Bend or fold your card.
  • Scratch or write on your card.
  • Wash your card or get your card wet.
  • Leave your card near magnets, TVs, microwaves or another magnetic stripe card.
  • Leave your card in hot places like the dashboard of your car.

Shopping with your WIC card

  • Use your WIC Shopping List and WIC Approved Food List when shopping.
  • The WICShopper app can help you identify WIC-approved foods and understand your available food benefits.
  • Select the WIC food items you want to buy. Pay close attention to the approved brands, products and sizes.
  • Some retailers have a designated WIC checkout lane.
  • You are allowed to have a proxy shop for you. Talk to your WIC local agency for more information.
  • If you are not able to purchase an item you feel should be allowed on WIC, check the size, variety and brand using the WIC Approved Food List. You may also contact the retailer’s customer service desk or your WIC local agency for assistance.

Common reasons you are not able to purchase an item include:

  • Not an approved WIC food.
  • Not a WIC benefit on your shopping list.
  • Benefit already redeemed this month.
  • Fresh produce changes often and may not be properly set up as WIC-approved in the retailer’s system.
  • If your card does not work or you receive an error message you do not understand, call customer service at 866-248-7553. Common error messages may include:
    • Card Not Active. Contact your WIC local agency.
    • Invalid PIN.
  • If an item is damaged or expired, it may be exchanged for an identical item.
  • WIC formula may only be returned to a WIC local agency for replacement benefits or exchange.

Checking out with your WIC card

  • Always use your WIC card first if you are using SNAP, credit, debit or cash to pay for other things in your transaction.
  • Tell the cashier you are using your WIC card.
  • The cashier will scan each item.
  • Give the cashier any manufacturer coupon or in-store promotions (e.g., buy one get one, buy one get one reduced, transaction discounts, store loyalty, cents-off).
  • Swipe your card.
  • Enter your 4-digit PIN.
  • The cashier will give you a WIC redemption receipt showing what will be removed from your benefits with this purchase. Make sure it is correct.
  • Press accept on the PIN pad if the redemption is correct. Press decline if there is a problem.
  • If your fruit and vegetable purchase total is more than your cash value benefit amount, you can pay the difference in another form of payment such as SNAP, cash, credit or debit.
  • The cashier will give you a WIC receipt. Make sure you have your card and receipt when you leave the store.

When to call customer service (866-248-7553)

  • Someone is using your card without your approval.
  • You want to check your food balance. You can also use the WICShopper app.
