Building Missouri’s Health Care Future
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is expanding initiatives to enhance Graduate Medical Education (GME) in Missouri to address healthcare workforce shortages, especially in rural and underserved urban areas.
What is GME?
Graduate Medical Education is the mandatory, multi-year residency training after medical school graduation required for full physician licensure. It is a salaried position in a training rich environment. GME can also include post-residency fellowships for further specialization.
2025 GME Funding Opportunities

Funds to establish a Graduate Medical Education (GME) Technical Assistance Center to support GME programs and entities working to establish Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited GME programs in Missouri. The TAC would provide technical assistance to Missouri GME programs to support program sustainability and efforts to recruit and retain physicians in Missouri to address the physician workforce shortages and challenges rural and underserved communities face thereby improving and expanding access to health care in Missouri. | Funds support development of new ACGME accredited programs in facilities that do not yet host GME training, especially rural and underserved populations. Organizations must have completed a feasibility assessment prior to application to ensure programs will be sustainable long-term through viable and stable funding mechanisms, such as Medicare, Medicaid and other public or private funding sources. |
Funds to strengthen existing residency programs through expansion into rural areas via the ACGME Rural Track Program (RPT) designation. | Funds to assess opportunities for starting or expanding residency programs. The assessment must include the feasibility of incorporating eight weeks of addiction training and eight weeks of training in a rural area. The addiction and rural training expectations can be combined into a single eight-week period. | Funds to integrate rural and addiction training into existing ACGME accredited programs by incorporating eight weeks of addiction training and eight weeks of training in a rural area. The addiction and rural training expectations can be combined into a single eight-week period. | Funds support ACGME accredited residency programs or sponsoring institutions (hospital, medical school, or consortium) to increase their resident complement. Programs must include curriculum in addiction for a cumulative amount of training time equal to a minimum of two weeks during the multiyear residency. |

- To receive automatic Office of Rural Health and Primary Care (DHSS/ORHPC) funding opportunity notifications and ultimately be able to submit funding applications, it will be critical for your organization to be registered in MissouriBUYS as a “Supplier”. Creating an account lets organizations select email notifications from state departments they are interested in and subsequently be able to submit RFP proposals to be considered in the selection process to potentially receive state funds.

The upcoming Missouri GME Conference, from April 29–30 at the St. Charles Convention Center, is a pivotal event for leaders in graduate medical education, healthcare, and economic development. The conference will cover essential topics such as strategies for growing Missouri's physician workforce, planning for GME development, and promoting rural and state GME initiatives.
Attendees will include: DIOs, GME Programs, Medical Schools, Legislators, Stakeholders, Economic Development Professionals and Rural Hospital and Health Clinic Leaders.
