Detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in bird and mosquito populations helps health officials predict and prevent human and domestic animal infections. These data are critical in establishing early trends and allowing reasonable response times for prevention and control activities that will reduce the threat of mosquito-transmitted disease.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has built a West Nile virus surveillance system that includes mosquito trapping, testing dead birds for infection, and assessing human case activity. These data are updated weekly from April through October.
