Dear Applicant(s):
The following practitioner types seeking controlled substance prescribing authority in Missouri must first complete a four-step process:
- Physician Assistant (PA)
- Assistant Physician (AP)
- Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
To obtain controlled substance authority in Missouri, each applicant must complete the following steps in sequential order:
- Obtain licensing from the appropriate Missouri licensing board (e.g. MO Board of Healing Arts, MO Board of Nursing).
- Submit verification of controlled substance certification from the appropriate Missouri licensing board.
- Apply for and obtain a Missouri state-level controlled substance registration from the MO Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD).
- Appy for and obtain a Missouri federal-level controlled substance registration from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
All applications to BNDD must be accompanied by a Collaborative Practice Arrangement (CPA) which lists a current Missouri controlled substance registrant as the supervising collaborating physician. If at any time the supervising physician ceases to have controlled substance authority in this state (regardless of cause), your controlled substance authority immediately terminates. Please see Section 334.104 RSMo., for details required in the CPA.
