What is an STI?
A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an infection passed from one person to another through sexual contact. They are spread through body fluids. They are caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. There are dozens of STIs, but the symptoms may vary between different infections. However, many people do not have symptoms. Bacterial and parasitic STIs are curable with antibiotics or other medications. Viral STIs cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be effectively managed with antiviral treatments. If left untreated, STIs can lead to long-term complications, including chronic pain and infertility.
