Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) are facilities other than hospitals that provide outpatient surgical services. ASCs are required to be licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) under state law (Section 197.205, RSMo.)

Most ASCs are also certified and approved to participate in the federal Medicare program by application and adherence to federal standards.

A subset of ASCs may instead be licensed as birthing centers by application and adherence to state licensure standards found at 19 CSR 30-30.090-30.110.

DHSS also administers the federal ASC program under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
