Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) data is organized into four separate subsections, referred to as Relationships.

The Family Relationship includes all individuals contained in a single TANF case. This can include parents, spouses, and children.

The Adult Relationship includes all persons who are designated as an adult, parent or spouse. People under the age of 18 can be included in this category if they meet the definition of head-of-household, parent, or spouse.

The Child Relationship includes all persons who are designated as youth and not as an adult, parent or spouse.

Person is the aggregate of the Adult and Child Relationships. TANF participants are, by definition, assigned to only one role, either Child or Adult.
