  1. HemoCue Hemoglobin Analysis: Many local WIC providers have been contacted by the Masimo Company to purchase their Pronto Non Invasive Hemoglobin analyzer for the WIC hemoglobin check. Missouri currently contracts with HemoCue until January 25, 2015. During 2014 we will be evaluating what hemoglobin analyzer system to use once the HemoCue contract has ended. We will be requesting local agency input on which hemoglobin system will work best for MO WIC.

USDA may also be providing more guidance on different technologies that are available for the hemoglobin analysis that give accurate reporting of the hemoglobin and hematocrit levels for risk factor assignment. If you have any questions please contact your TA Nutritionist.

  2. Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines: Toolkit for Counseling and Dissemination Webinar: The Board on Children, Youth, and Families and Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences are sponsoring a webinar on Monday, September 9, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. CDT to highlight the Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines toolkit. Partial funding support for the project was provided by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau. There is no registration fee for the webinar. The purpose of the webinar is to introduce the Pregnancy Weight Gain Guidelines Toolkit to providers who provide counseling and care to women during pregnancy.

    • Review and discuss ways to implement the 2009 Pregnancy Weight Gain Recommendations.
    • Review dissemination products and understand how to use them effectively.
    • Discuss how to expand outreach and increase effectiveness by partnering with other professionals and groups.
