  1. Missouri Breastfeeding Month: August 1-7 is designated each year as World Breastfeeding Week by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the entire month of August is designated Missouri Breastfeeding Month. The theme for this year is “Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers”. The objective is to draw attention to the importance of peer support in helping mothers to establish and sustain breastfeeding.

A new 8 x 10 poster has been developed to promote peer counseling services, which is available at the MO DHSS warehouse (see attached sample). The Breastfeeding Peer Counseling brochure is also still available. The poster is catalog #473 and the brochure is #157 and can be ordered at http://health.mo.gov/warehouse/e-l-wicns.html. The brochure is also available in several languages at http://health.mo.gov/living/families/wic/wiclwp/bfpc.php.

For additional ideas for Missouri Breastfeeding Month, please see the attached suggested promotion activities list. One of the suggestions is to host a “Big Latch On” event, in which many communities have participated in the past. Please consider hosting or participating in this nationwide event. More information is available at www.biglatchon.org. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Mertzlufft by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-526-4792. (TWO ATTACHMENTS)

  2. National 2014 WIC Calendars: The State WIC office plans to purchase the 2014 National WIC Association calendars. The order survey will be sent to local WIC coordinators on July 2, 2013. It is very important for your agency to complete the survey by July 9, 2013 in order to receive the 2014 calendars. For more information about the 2014 calendars, please visit the website below:
http://nwaonlinestore.promoshop.com/featuredproduct/index.aspx?DPSV_Id=62998. If you have questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.

  3. New WIC Food List (English version): The Warehouse shipped the Missouri Approved Food List (Effective October 1, 2013 - September 30, 2015) to local WIC providers on June 27, 2013. Spanish version of the new food list will be shipped to local WIC providers by July 15, 2013. If you have questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.

  4. Elevated Blood Lead Levels: When a local WIC provider obtains or receives referral data of an elevated blood lead level of ≥ 10 mcg/dl, the abnormal blood lead level must be entered into MOWINS for Risk Factor 211 to be automatically assigned. For lead values that contain a decimal, enter into MOWINS as a whole number, dropping the decimal. For instance, enter 9.9 as 9, enter 10.5 as 10. According to the State Health Lab, the lead test is not sensitive enough to accurately report decimal values.

The elevated lead level result must be within 12 months of the date of certification or recertification. Certifying staff will assign a food package and provide appropriate referral information to the participant. CPAs and nutritionists will provide guidance on how to reduce exposure to lead through appropriate counseling. Missouri Annual Childhood Lead Testing Area Requirements, updated in April 2013, are located on the web at http://health.mo.gov/living/environment/lead/pdf/StatewideMap.pdf. If you have questions, please contact your District TA Nutritionist.

  5. New Ethics Requirement for RD and DTR Recertification: On May 9, 2011, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) voted to require that RDs and DTRs complete a minimum of 1 CPEU in Ethics (Learning Need Code 1050) during each 5-year recertification cycle. This requirement is in effect starting with the 5-year recertification cycle which began June 1, 2012 and ends on May 31, 2017. The CDR notification is found at the following link: http://cdrnet.org/news/ethics-requirements-for-recertification. If you have questions, please contact your District TA Nutritionist.

  6. Public Comment Invited on 2014 WIC State Plan: The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is soliciting public comment on the proposed Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Special Supplemental Nutrition Program FFY 2014 State Plan, which covers the period beginning October 1, 2013 and ending September 30, 2014.
