SUBJECT 1: Message for WIC Participants on Formula Availability. The state agency is requesting local agencies to share the following message with WIC participants who have formula benefits:

“If you don’t see your formula at the store, ask a store manager!”

We have received numerous reports that participants are not able to find Similac formula or that they are taking Enfamil formula to the register to purchase with their eWIC card. In most cases, when state agency checks with the store, the formula was available, but it may have be in a different location or the participant just needs to ask for help.

Suggestions for sharing this message with participants include:

  1. Printing a shopping list for the participant before they leave the agency.
  2. Adding the message “If you don’t see your formula at the store, ask a store manager!” to the shopping list by typing it on before the shopping list is printed, or by adding a sticker with that message.
  3. Giving the participant a Missouri WIC Approved Food List and pointing out the Infant Formula section that says “Quantity, brand, type, and size as issued.”
  4. Helping the participant download the WIC Shopper App where they will see the banner “Similac Formula Only beginning Feb 1, 2021!” When they “tap for info,” they will be able to open the participant letter about “Missouri new Abbott contract formula.”
  5. Giving participants the agency phone number to call if they have questions when shopping.

Please remember to maintain a breastfeeding friendly clinic. This message “If you don’t see your formula at the store, ask a store manager!” should be seen only by participants with a formula fed infant. Contact your TA nutritionist if you have questions.

SUBJECT 2: Registration Open: IBCLC Exam Preparation Course. The WIC state agency is hosting a virtual International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Exam Preparation course on five Thursdays-- April 15, April 22, April 29, May 6, and May 13, 2021. This course will meet 45 hours of the lactation-specific education needed to be an exam candidate by the International Board Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBLCE). Registration for this course is now open here. Although this course will briefly review basic breastfeeding concepts, it will focus primarily on advanced material. If staff have not taken a basic breastfeeding course, please plan to sign up for the Fundamentals of Breastfeeding: an 18 hour course, which will be offered in July. Registration for the Fundamentals of Breastfeeding course will open soon. The state agency expects to host a 45-hour course once per year, for two more years. This is the same course that has been offered the previous two years, so please do not repeat the course. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Schlientz at 573-751-6468 or by email at lisa.schlientz@health.mo.gov

SUBJECT 3: Health Care Provider Webpage and WIC-27. The Health Care Provider pages on the WIC website have been updated and include revisions to the Missouri WIC Approved Formula and WIC-Eligible Nutritionals listing, WIC-27, and Health Care Provider FAQ page. A WIC Non-allowable Items Letter has been added for local agencies to send to insurance companies and health care providers as needed. Please refer health care providers to this webpage. If you have any questions, please contact your TA nutritionist or call 800-392-8209, and ask for the nutritionist on formula duty.
