SUBEJCT 1: MOWINS Help Desk Closures. The MOWINS Help Desk will be closed on the following dates and times:

  • Friday, June 1 from 3:00-4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 14 all day
  • Thursday, June 21 from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The MOWINS Help Desk will check email and voicemail frequently during the closure times and will respond as soon as possible.

SUBJECT 2: WIC Invoices. WIC invoices for May 2018 (submitted for payment in the month of June), along with prior months, must be submitted through the Online WIC Invoicing System by close of business Thursday, June 7, 2018. Invoices submitted after that date will be held and paid in July 2018. This change in schedule complies with the close of the State Fiscal Year 2018 payment processing deadlines. SUBJECT 3: FFY 2018 Missouri WIC Program Marketing Plan. The state agency has developed a FFY 2018 marketing plan with several objectives, including increasing the use of the program by eligible participants and overcoming the stigma associated with the WIC program. This statewide campaign includes radio public service announcements, display ads, and social media and email marketing to promote the Missouri WIC program. The marketing plan is located here.   • Great Mothers, Strong Research - Evidence behind Nurse-Family Partnership webinar on June 7 at 2:00 p.m. CST. Nurse-Family Partnership is a national home-visiting program that matches skilled nurses with first-time vulnerable mothers, to provide home-visits free of charge from pregnancy through the child’s second birthday. During the visits, the nurses and mothers discuss relevant topics to support the health, development, and resources of the mother and child. The program began as a research project in Elmira, NY in the 1970’s. Since then, the research has been replicated and the program expanded, with consistent evidence of effectiveness. Studies have repeatedly shown that mothers participating in the program have better birth outcomes and maternal and child development than comparable families not enrolled in the program. This webinar, hosted in partnership with Nurse Family Partnership, will highlight some of the foundational research on the program, and highlight results from recent studies that are relevant to WIC programs and participants, like breastfeeding and infant birth outcomes.
  • Improving Feeding Practices by Helping Caregivers Understand Toddler Behavior webinar on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. CST. This webinar, hosted in partnership with Association of State Public Health Nutritionists, will be led by M. Jane Heinig, PhD, IBCLC, UC Davis Human Lactation Center. The “Baby Behavior” curriculum, developed at UC Davis in collaboration with California WIC, is being used in more than 40 states. More recently, UC Davis has worked with the California and Arizona WIC programs to expand the messages to address feeding challenges among older infants and toddlers. In this webinar, Dr. Heinig will describe the core messages of the expanded curriculum and describe how the curriculum was adapted to be used in child care settings.
  • Engaging Families in Healthy Active Living webinar on July 26 at 2:00 p.m. CST. Early childhood settings such as child care and Head Start support healthy habits in centers, however, many staff and professionals struggle to engage families to continue healthy habits at home. This webinar will provide an overview of target healthy behaviors for children birth to five and strategies for encouraging families to incorporate healthy eating and nutrition habits at home.
  • What's Normal in Breastfeeding: What We Can Learn from Research webinar on August 9 at 2:00 p.m. CST. Highlighting the research from the University of Western Australia, the focus of this webinar is to provide an overview of normal breastfeeding behaviors. The published findings of Dr. Jacqueline Kent describing behaviors such as feeding frequencies, day time versus night time feeding patterns, differences between male and female infant feeding patterns, feeding volumes, length of feeding sessions, twenty-four hour milk production volumes, and extended breastfeeding will be discussed.
  • Within and Outside the WIC Clinic: Collaboration to Promote Breastfeeding-Friendly Environments webinar on August 16 at 2:00 p.m. CST. This webinar will discuss the importance of breastfeeding initiatives on the individual and policies, systems and environmental levels; describe ways in which Minnesota WIC supports and promotes breastfeeding for participants and staff; describe community partnerships which can improve support for breastfeeding outside the WIC environment; and discuss how mentoring of students can strengthen breastfeeding support efforts within and outside of WIC.
  • Improving Nurse Breastfeeding Knowledge with a Hands-On Learning Intervention webinar on August 23 at 2:00 p.m. CST. The webinar will discuss the results of a study created to evaluate the effectiveness of hands-on learning to improve nurse breastfeeding knowledge. The intervention was adapted from a WIC training platform that consisted of six participatory breastfeeding stations taught by nurse peers. Nurses completed a pretest assessment of breastfeeding knowledge before the training, and the same post-test assessment after the training. Differences in pretest and post test scores differed significantly, reflecting an improvement in nurse breastfeeding knowledge. Attendees will be able to describe the efficacy of learners doing rather than just hearing, and identify at least two new interactive teaching tools to utilize with staff for breastfeeding training purposes.
  • Workplace Breastfeeding Laws & WIC’s Role in Supporting Breastfeeding Employees webinar on August 30 at 2:00 p.m. CST. Returning to work is challenging for breastfeeding mothers, often resulting in earlier than intended weaning. Workplace support is critical for the success of breastfeeding employees. This session will cover the changing landscape of workplace laws for breastfeeding employees, including recent legal rulings broadening the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to include lactation. State laws will also be addressed. WIC’s role in advocating for breastfeeding mothers who may be experiencing difficulties receiving the accommodations they are entitled to will be explored. Kansas WIC partnered with the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition (KBC) to provide education to WIC staff about how to advocate for breastfeeding employees. A referral system was created to provide a warm hand-off to the KBC for challenging cases. The Kansas WIC education and referral system can be easily replicated in other states with state programs with the capacity to assist with workplace advocacy efforts.

JOB POSTING: WIC Coordinator - Hickory County Health Department. Hickory County Health Department has a full-time job opening for a WIC Coordinator. WIC Coordinator responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and coordinating WIC activities, overseeing staff to ensure goals are met, and that the agency operates within program guidelines and rules
  • Assures appropriate local WIC policies and procedures are established and enforced in compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Has the ability to develop plans, implements action plan(s), and evaluate effectiveness
  • Performs supervisory & management duties, including but not limited to handling participant complaints, and staffing
  • Develops, coordinates, and documents implementation of ongoing outreach activities in the community

This position requires knowledge of current developments in public health and application to the WIC program, working knowledge of effective management techniques, the ability to gather, interpret, evaluate and use statistical data, as well as the ability to work well with people of diverse socioeconomic/cultural backgrounds.
