SUBEJCT 1: Missouri Breastfeeding Month. August 1-7 is designated each year as World Breastfeeding Week by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the entire month of August is designated Missouri Breastfeeding Month. The theme for this year is “Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life.” Breastfeeding is the foundation of life due to its impact on building health, mother’s well-being, and a brighter future for our Missouri families. For more information and to download the 2018 World Breastfeeding Week poster and Action Folder go to their website at worldbreastfeedingweek.org.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has also developed an ad campaign focused on breastfeeding support that will be promoted through social media. For ideas for your local agency or community, please see the attached Missouri Breastfeeding Month action ideas. For more information on state breastfeeding initiatives, click here. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Schlientz by email at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-751-6468.

SUBJECT 2: MOWINS Help Desk Closure. The MOWINS Help Desk will be closed on the following date and time:

  • Thursday, July 26, from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, August 2, from 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, August 21, all day

The MOWINS Help Desk will check email and voicemail frequently during the closure times and will respond as soon as possible.

SUBJECT 3: Breast Pump Order. The state agency is providing an opportunity for WIC local agencies to order personal accessory sets, Hygeia Enjoye multi-user electric breast pumps, Hygeia EnHande manual breast pumps, and Medela personal double electric single-user breast pumps. Single-user means that this pump is not meant to be shared with other women. This pump can be given to mothers who meet the following criteria:

  • Mother must be separated from her infant at least 32 hours per week.
  • Mother must be planning to offer breast milk exclusively to her infant and committed to continued long-term exclusive breastfeeding.
  • Infant must be receiving no formula from WIC.
  • Pump cannot be provided to the mother before four (4) weeks postpartum. If a mother needs a pump before then, she may be loaned a multi-user electric breast pump.

For each participant that is provided this pump, the Single User Personal Electric Breast Pump Agreement/Questionnaire (attached) must be completed. It is important that WIC local agencies promote this pump to prenatal women and use it as an additional incentive to promote exclusive breastfeeding.

Important Ordering Information:

  • The Hygeia Enjoye will be the multi-user electric breast pump available to order as a loaner breast pump.
  • The Hygeia personal accessory kit contains all the parts for both the Hygeia Enjoye and Lactina Select electric breast pumps.
  • The Hygeia Enjoye breast pump does not come with a carrying case, so a universal black tote will be purchased separately. When the participant returns the breast pump, they will keep the tote.

Local agencies will need to continue to use the Medela Lactina Select breast pumps that are in the local agency inventory until their end of life. As additional multi-user breast pumps are needed, the Hygeia Enjoye pump will need to be purchased. Both of these pumps have a three (3) year warranty.

For more information on the Hygeia pumps see the Hygeia training videos on their website. If you would like to request any of these items for your agency, please complete the attached order form and email to Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov by COB on Friday, August 17, 2018. If you have any questions about the pumps, please contact the State Breastfeeding Coordinator, Lisa Schlientz, at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-751-6468.
