September 18, 2017 WIC Update
SUBJECT 1: Providing WIC Services for Evacuees from Disaster Areas
SUBJECT 2: Change in Homeless Food Package
JOB POSTING: WIC Clerk - Platte County Health Department
JOB POSTING: Nutritionist - City of St. Joseph Health Department
SUBEJCT 1: Providing WIC Services for Evacuees from Disaster Areas. The recent flooding and hurricanes in other states have prompted some evacuees to seek emergency housing in Missouri. Attached to this week’s WIC Update you will find detailed information in the document, “Guidance for Providing WIC Services to Disaster-Related Evacuees.” Questions on providing WIC services to disaster-related evacuees may be directed to Susan Hatton at the WIC State Agency at (573) 526-7706.
SUBJECT 2: Change in Homeless Food Package. A Homeless Individual is a woman, infant, or child who lacks a fixed and regular nighttime residence, whose primary nighttime residence is a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter (including a welfare hotel, a congregate shelter, or a shelter for victims of domestic violence) designated to provide temporary living accommodation or has been displaced due to a disaster. On the “Demographics” tab in MOWINS the “Homeless” checkbox must be checked when a participant meets the definition of homeless. This insures correct risk factor assignment.
After conducting a survey of local agencies, it was determined that most participants meeting this definition have access to a refrigerator and do not need shelf stable food items. For this reason, on Friday, September 22nd the default homeless package will be changed to the standard food package for each participant category. Food packages can be tailored for those participants who need powdered milk, no eggs, or other changes due to their living situation. Refer to ER# 2.08100 Guidelines for Food Issuance: Homeless Women, Infants, and Children for options when tailoring a homeless food package. If you have questions, please contact your district nutritionist.
