SUBJECT 3: Folic Acid in Corn Tortillas. Wheat and rice flours have been fortified with folic acid since 1996. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agreed to allow the addition of folic acid to corn masa flour, the main grain in the Hispanic diet and many other Americans’ diets. “Fortifying grains with folic acid has been a tremendously successful intervention in promoting healthier pregnancies and preventing birth defects, leading to a one-third decline in neural-tube defects,” Dr. Benard Dreyer, president of the AAP, said in a statement.
Manufacturers may begin voluntary fortification of corn masa flour with folic acid on April 15, 2016. Consumers wishing to purchase products made with corn masa flour fortified with folic acid should check the ingredients statement for the presence of folic acid.
