SUBJECT 5: Missouri Breastfeeding Month: August 1-7 is designated each year as World Breastfeeding Week by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the entire month of August is designated Missouri Breastfeeding Month. The theme for this year is “Breastfeeding and Work: Let’s Make it Work!” The focus is to educate employers on the benefit of providing worksite lactation support and to recognize businesses that support their breastfeeding employees. This is an excellent opportunity to promote the Missouri “Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite” and “Breastfeeding Friendly Childcare” programs.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has also developed an ad campaign focused on breastfeeding support that will be promoted through social media. For ideas for your local agency or community, please see the attached Missouri Breastfeeding Month action ideas list, proclamation and a sample article that you can publish in your local newspaper or chamber of commerce newsletter. For more information on state breastfeeding initiatives go to http://health.mo.gov/living/families/wic/breastfeeding/. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Mertzlufft by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-526-4792. (THREE ATTACHMENTS)

This order form should not be shared with agencies outside of WIC, Home Visiting Program, or local health departments.
Land of Smiles DVDs are still available. This cute and educational video was created by Delta Dental and is comprised of short video segments that young children will enjoy watching in your WIC waiting areas. Children learn how important it is to take care of their teeth as they watch the Tooth Wizard battle Plaque Man. If you would like a free copy for your clinic, please email Sharlet Kroll at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Last September, the Missouri Dental Association (MDA), in partnership with DHSS, mailed every WIC clinic a Healthy Smiles from the Start kit, which included a DVD with various resources and 100 brochures in English. The brochures are intended to be a resource provided to WIC families. Healthy Smiles from the Start is a suite of patient education materials, developed by the American Dental Association (ADA), to help new parents understand the importance of oral health for pregnant women and babies.
