Immunization - Vaccine University

Missouri’s Vaccine University has been considered a best practice around the nation for the past 10 years. The trainings have provided much needed information on vaccine ordering, storage, administration, VFC (Vaccines For children) program requirements and other valuable information.
In order to better serve the growing number of vaccine providers in the state, the Bureau of Immunization Assessment and Assurance at Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has implemented ShowMeVaxU, an online training and education resource as a way to provide better access to this important information.
ShowMeVaxU.com is a continuously available online training resource. Vaccine providers, local public health departments, school nurses, day care personnel, pharmacists and others who need the information can create a free account and login to view the modules.
Available Courses
New lessons will be added to the ShowMeVaxU website frequently. Available lessons are:
- Vaccine Essentials – describes the benefits of immunizations and addresses commonly asked questions. It also provides education relevant to vaccine-preventable diseases, immunity and how vaccines work in the body to prevent disease.
- Preparing Vaccines – explains ways and best practices for preparing vaccines and reviews the three types of vaccines (injectable, nasal, and oral). It also covers vaccine abbreviations, physician’s written orders, checking vials for expiration dates, and reconstituting vaccines.
- Administering Vaccines – demonstrates the routes of vaccine administration (oral, nasal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous). Practice exercises simulate correct injection site and method of administration.
- Storage and Handling – teaches how to properly store vaccines in acceptable refrigeration and freezer storage units. Other topics covered include the do’s and do not’s of vaccine storage and handling, best practices, and temperature monitoring and recording.
