Risk Factors for PPD
There are several risk factors that increase the chances of a woman getting perinatal and postpartum depressions:
- Prior depression – increases risk of getting PPD by 30%
- Prior postpartum depression – increases risk by 50%
- Prior postpartum psychosis – increases risk by 70%
- Depression during pregnancy
- Prior premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
- Family history of depression or bipolar disorder
- At-risk pregnant women - teenage pregnancy, unmarried pregnancies and pregnancies for low-income women and families
- Recent stressful events – marital/partner discord, loss of a loved one, a family illness and/or a premature birth
