Postpartum thyroiditis is a major concern for women who have just delivered a baby.

  • 5-10% of new mothers are affected during the baby’s first year
  • Thyrotoxicosis (destruction-induced) can occur one to four months after the baby is born
    • Symptoms include fatigue, palpitations, and in rare instances, psychosis
    • 30% will develop hypothyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism can begin four to eight months after the birth of a baby
    • 40% of those affected will require treatment
    • 30% can develop permanent hypothyroidism
    • Symptoms include fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain and depression
