Postpartum thyroiditis is a major concern for women who have just delivered a baby.
- 5-10% of new mothers are affected during the baby’s first year
- Thyrotoxicosis (destruction-induced) can occur one to four months after the baby is born
- Symptoms include fatigue, palpitations, and in rare instances, psychosis
- 30% will develop hypothyroidism
- Hypothyroidism can begin four to eight months after the birth of a baby
- 40% of those affected will require treatment
- 30% can develop permanent hypothyroidism
- Symptoms include fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain and depression
