SUBJECT 4: 2018 Missouri WIC Conference Survey

SUBEJCT 1: Legume Food Item Description Change in MOWINS - December 1, 2017. Women who receive Food Package V or VII get two legume food items in their default food package. The two food item descriptions that are generated include: “ONE POUND DRY BEANS or 4-16 OUNCE CAN BEANS” and “16-18 OZ PEANUT BUTTER - STORE BRAND”. On December 1, 2017 these two options will no longer be available and will be replaced with one food item description: “16-18 OZ PEANUT BUTTER OR 1 LB DRY OR 4-16 OZ CAN BEANS”.

For women who receive the default Food Packages V or VII, the legume quantity will be two (2), which will allow them to obtain any combination of two (2) of these items. This change will allow participants more flexibility at the store. Starting December 1, 2017, local agencies will need to update current food packages for women receiving Food Packages V and VII to add the new food item description and delete the old ones. If you have any questions regarding these changes, please contact your district nutritionist.

SUBJECT 2: Damaged Multi-User Electric Breast Pumps. Do not discard damaged multi-user electric breast pumps until your agency has submitted a Missing or Damaged Multi-user Electric Breast Pump Form and has received notification from the state agency to dispose of the pump. Damaged may include physical damage, bug infestation, chemical contamination, etc. Please remember that these pumps have a three (3) year warranty. As part of our contract with Medela and Hygeia, they will repair or clean pumps that are under warranty at no cost. For pumps with an expired warranty, there will be a charge to repair or clean, but the manufacturer needs to be contacted to determine if it is more cost effective to repair or clean the pump than to replace it. For questions about damaged pumps, please email Lisa Schlientz at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or call her at 573-751-6468.

SUBJECT 3: Hygeia Manual Breast Pumps. Some local agencies have reported that they have Hygeia manual breast pumps that are not draining milk properly. Participants have experienced milk not being able to drain through the duckbill valve quickly enough, which can cause milk to be lost. The state agency is trying to determine whether this is an isolated manufacturing issue or a widespread problem. If you have received reports that the manual pumps are not working properly, or if you would like to provide other feedback on the Hygeia pumps, please contact Lisa Schlientz at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or call her at 573-751-6468.
