October 16, 2017 WIC Update

SUBJECT 1: Workplace Violence
SUBJECT 2: Loving Support Award of Excellence
SUBJECT 3: MO WIC Conference Planning Committee

SUBEJCT 1: Workplace Violence. Recently there have been a few incidents where local agency (LA) WIC staff has been threatened both verbally and physically by WIC participants or proxies. Refer to WOM Policy ER#1.06200 regarding actions that may be taken against an offender in abusive or threatening situations. While the WIC state agency (SA) does not require an individual agency policy regarding workplace violence, it is encouraged that LAs consider an internal policy regarding workplace violence prevention and response for the safety of LA staff, participants, and proxies.

The following documents come from the USDA and other federal agencies and can be used as resources when developing or revising internal policies regarding workplace violence prevention and response:

If you have questions, please contact your administrative technical assistant.

SUBJECT 2: Loving Support Award of Excellence. Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has announced that the Loving Support Award of Excellence application period is now open. The Loving Support Award of Excellence was developed to recognize and celebrate WIC local agencies that provide exemplary breastfeeding programs and support services. Over the last three years the award has been given, Missouri has had 18 local agencies that have met the criteria and were recognized.

Three levels of excellence will be recognized and awarded: Gold, Gold Premiere, and Gold Elite. The award is valid for a four-year period; however an agency may apply for an award of higher achievement the following year after receiving an award.

The main qualification to apply is for the local agency to have a Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program that meets all of the required core components of the FNS Loving Support© Model for a successful peer counseling program for at least one year. All of Missouri’s “Breastfeeding Friendly WIC Clinics” should, at a minimum, meet the Gold level and are all encouraged to apply.
