JOB POSTING: Nutritionist/Dietitian - Crescent Clinic WIC

SUBJECT 1: CLIA Certificate of Waiver. The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) is a Federal program which establishes quality standards for all laboratory testing to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of patient test results. The HemoCue analyzers used by WIC are CLIA waived, which means they require a Certificate of Waiver. DHSS-WIC has purchased a CLIA Certificate of Waiver for Local Agency sites in Missouri. This certificate expires August 18, 2019. This is a waiver for the operation of the HemoCue analyzer as part of the WIC certification process. The waiver was emailed to all LAs this week. The certificate should be displayed where the testing is conducted. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Roberts at 573-751-6204 or Jennifer.L.Roberts@health.mo.gov

SUBJECT 2: State Agency Closed for Eclipse. The State Agency in Jefferson City will be closed on August 21, 2017 due to the high volume of visitors to Jefferson City planning to view the solar eclipse; District Offices will still be open on this day. There will be MOWINS Help Desk and formula approval coverage from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on August 21. Call 800-554-2544 to contact the MOWINS Help Desk and for formula approval.

If you have questions, please contact Lisa Ivy at Lisa.Ivy@health.mo.gov or 573-526-5323 or 800-392-8209.

SUBJECT 3: REMINDER - MOWINS Release 2.29 on September 1. Agencies having clinic on Friday will be able to download the update any time after 10:00 am on Friday, September 1st. Agencies that are planning to do the update on Friday are requested to watch their email account for notification on when they can access MOWINS; should it become available before 10:00 am. Only agencies that have Friday clinics are asked to download Friday morning. The following Monday, September 4th, is Labor Day. Agencies with Tuesday clinics may choose to download on Friday afternoon or later. We are requesting agencies that do not have clinics on Tuesday to wait until at least Tuesday afternoon, or later in the week, to login/download.

If you have machines that are not being used, they do not need to be updated on Tuesday, September 5. Please wait until later in the week to update any machines that are not being used, however we request that all computers be updated by no later than September 15th.

Instructions for download: Log into MOWINS, allow the download, log back in when prompted, close the clinic window, do the reset/update, and then log out of MOWINS. You may then log back in and resume MOWINS operations.

Before doing a reset/update, close the clinic application window. The “W” must still be open in the lower icon tray. When the clinic window is open, it locks the data files on the workstation which doesn’t always allow the necessary updates to occur.

Should you need any assistance, please contact the MOWINS Help Desk at 800-554-2544.

SUBJECT 6: Loving Support Award of Excellence. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded six WIC local agencies in Missouri the Loving Support Awards of Excellence. The award program was established to recognize local agencies that have provided exemplary breastfeeding promotion and support activities. Three levels of excellence were recognized and awarded: Gold, Gold Premiere, and Gold Elite. Only local agencies that have operated a peer counseling program for at least one year, and meet all of the required core components of the FNS Loving Support© Model for a successful peer counseling program, were eligible.

Of the 83 WIC local agencies recognized across the country, ten are located in the Mountain Plains Region. The six local agencies in Missouri that were awarded the Gold level are:

Congratulations for this achievement and thank you to all our local agencies for all the work you do in supporting breastfeeding. If you have any questions please contact Lisa Schlientz at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-751-6468.

SUBJECT 7: Breastfeeding Rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released the 2014 National Immunization Survey (NIS) breastfeeding data. The NIS survey measures breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity rates, as well as the rate of formula supplementation for infants. As you look at our state-specific rates, and compare them to rates from previous years, keep in mind that state sample sizes are small, so state data confidence intervals are wide. While some changes at the state level appear to be large, up or down, none of the changes from last year are statistically significant. Also, keep in mind that these are rates for babies born in 2014, so more recent work in improving support for breastfeeding will not be reflected in these new estimates. The WIC Breastfeeding Report for the period 7/1/2016 to 6/30/2017 is also available. The Missouri WIC Program has seen an increase in both breastfeeding initiation and duration, with a state initiation rate of 71.1%. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our local agencies for their success in improving breastfeeding rates and to thank you for all the work you do in helping our moms reach their breastfeeding goals! If you have any questions about breastfeeding rates, please contact Lisa Schlientz at Lisa.Schlientz@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-751-6468.

SUBJECT 8: CEU Corner.
Veganism: Plant-Based Diets and Eating Disorders
Can you be both vegan and working on recovering from an Eating Disorder? This live webinar will explore the relationship between plant-based diets, orthorexia, and anorexia. While many clients will do better on an omnivore diet, it is possible to counsel clients who wish to remain vegan and work on their recovery. The presenter, Alexandra Caspero, will touch on various diets of restriction and how they overlap with eating disorder recovery as well as provide tools for dietitians working with these special populations. The Today’s Dietitian’s Learning Library’s August 23rd webinar rate is $19.99 and the presentation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

More Nutrition Education
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation has provided a collection of toolkits, programs, tip sheets, and webinars that have consumer-friendly content and are created on science-based information to educate members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the public on the important role of nutrition education. These resources are available at no charge, courtesy of the Foundation’s Kids Eat Right and Future of Food Initiatives, which believes in advancing public health and nutrition utilizing the expertise of registered dietitians.
