SUBJECT 1: MOWINS Changes to Take Place October 1. There will be changes made in MOWINS for the Revision 14 Risk Factors, which will be effective October 1. A summary of these changes is located on the MOWINS website under the Release Information, Tip/Tricks and Defects section.

SUBJECT 2: State Breastfeeding Coordinator - Central WIC Office. The Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), Bureau of WIC and Nutrition Services, currently has an opening for a Nutrition Specialist that will function as the State Breastfeeding Coordinator. This position is located in the Jefferson City office. Please see the attached “position blurb” for additional information. Interested individuals must be eligible for the job classification of Nutrition Specialist within the Missouri Merit System. SUBJECT 3: Basket Raffle Fundraiser for the Missouri 2016 WIC Conference - St. Louis, MO. The Missouri WIC Conference will be held October 26 - 28 at the Double Tree Hotel/Union Station in St. Louis. The Missouri WIC Association (MWA) will sponsor the Basket Raffle Fundraiser again this year, and would like to invite you to donate a basket. MWA is hoping to have a great selection of baskets this year and is looking forward to seeing you at the Conference. SUBJECT 4: 2017 National WIC Association WIC Calendar - Shipping Plan. The State WIC office plans to ship the 2017 WIC calendars to local agencies during the week of September 26, 2016. If your agency would like to receive the calendars later, please contact Takako Tagami at takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov

SUBJECT 5: Breastfeeding Rates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released the 2016 Breastfeeding Report Card. The report card includes two groups of indicators, which measure types of support in key community settings as well as the most current data on breastfeeding goals as outlined in Healthy People 2020. The WIC Breastfeeding Report for the period 7/1/2015 to 6/30/2016 is also available. The Missouri WIC Program has seen an increase in both breastfeeding initiation and duration, with a state initiation rate of 70.9%. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our local agencies for their success in improving breastfeeding rates and to thank you for all the work you do in helping our moms reach their breastfeeding goals! Smoking Cessation for Pregnancy and Beyond Training
E-Cigarettes and Pregnancy is a free, online interactive presentation on electronic nicotine delivery systems and their potential health effects during and after pregnancy and discusses effective tobacco cessation treatments. E-Cigarettes and Pregnancy is a new module for Smoking Cessation for Pregnancy and Beyond: A Virtual Clinic, an online training designed for health professionals to effectively assist women in quitting smoking.

Mindful Eating in Nutrition Counseling for Eating Behaviors: What Research Suggests
This continuing education course sponsored by the Hass Avocado Board examines the meaning and practice of mindful eating and its benefits in relation to problematic eating behaviors that affect many people. It also explores the potential value to RDs of adopting a mindful eating approach to better support clients.

The Power of Protein: Quality & Quantity in Healthy Eating Patterns
Emerging research has demonstrated the benefits of eating higher protein diets (within the context of the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range), particularly related to sports nutrition, weight management, and healthy aging. Evolving science is also beginning to examine the efforts of protein quality and timing to help further refine practical recommendations to optimize consumption. Primary responsibilities of this position include planning and implementing the nutritional components of the WIC program, completing the job functions of a WIC Nutritionist, and providing nutrition and breastfeeding counseling and education to eligible families. This position is 30 to 32 hours a week.
