SUBJECT 2: Changes to the WIC Approved Food List. A new WIC Approved Food List will go into effect January 1, 2017. Changes to the food list were made in order to provide more choices of WIC approved foods. Please see the attached list of changes for more information.

The English version of the WIC Approved Food List has been shipped to all local agencies. Local agencies who have received the Spanish version in the past should expect to have those the week of December 19-23, 2016. When the shipment is received by your agency, please open the boxes and verify that you have received the updated WIC Approved Food List (Effective January 1, 2017). SUBJECT 3: Local Agency Clinic Assessment Tool. As administrators of the WIC program in Missouri, the WIC and Nutrition Services bureau must assure that management evaluations of local WIC agencies are conducted. One of the ways we do this is by asking local agencies to conduct a self-evaluation approximately one year after an on-site WIC monitoring visit has taken place.

In order to evaluate our Participant Centered Services, we are asking local agencies to use the Clinic Assessment Tool to conduct a self-assessment, which will replace the Self-Monitoring form previously used for the self-evaluation component. Using the Clinic Assessment Tool, local agencies should observe clinic(s) in the areas of Customer Service Skills, Clinic Environment, Service Delivery, and Individual and Group Education.

Agencies should note areas of excellence and opportunities for improvement for each section and in the Recommendations for Improving WIC Services in your clinic(s). This assessment tool should be used to assess a minimum of twenty percent (20%) of total clinic sites of the agency, with one of those sites being the agency’s main site.

Note: This Clinic Assessment Tool is a modified version of the Mid-Atlantic WIC Services Toolkit and the Western Region WIC PCE Assessment Tools for Participant-Centered Nutrition Education and Services created by Altarum Institute.

The completed Clinic Assessment Tool should be sent by email to WICOperations@health.mo.gov. If you have questions, please contact your WIC Technical Assistance team.

SUBJECT 4: Welcome to WIC Videos. The Missouri WIC Program has developed a series of four videos that can be used as an orientation for new WIC participants. These videos will help families by providing information on their rights and responsibilities, buying healthy foods from WIC-authorized retailers, the approved food list (especially fruits and vegetables), nutrition education, health screenings and breastfeeding support. The videos are available in English or with Spanish closed-captioned.  Access the videos on the Welcome to WIC or Social Media Tools web pages. These videos are available to stream in your waiting room, place on your web page, or use as an instructional video with participants. If you would prefer a DVD with all four videos, they are also available for order using the WIC 8 order form.

If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact D'Anne Ward at 1-800-392-8209 or email danne.ward@health.mo.gov
