JOB POSTINGS: WIC BREASTFEEDING COORDINATOR/NUTRITIONIST - ST. LOUIS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH


SUBJECT 1: VENA Refresher Training - Registration Now Open. Nutrition Education Opportunity: A refresher and follow-up training to the VENA (Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment) trainings provided in 2006 and 2007. At least one counseling staff from each agency is required to attend. All other counseling staff is encouraged to attend. This training is not for WIC Certifiers. This all-day continuing education program focuses on the basic understanding of the key VENA concepts (open-ended questions, rapport building, affirming statements and critical thinking), demonstrating how to use VENA concepts throughout the participant’s WIC experience. Dates and locations are listed below:

March 10th in Jefferson City
March 17th in Independence
April 11th in St. Charles
April 13th in Cape Girardeau
April 18th in Springfield
April 27th in Columbia
April 28th in Kirksville

SUBJECT 2: New USDA’s “AND JUSTICE FOR ALL” Poster - Bilingual Version. The state WIC office plans to ship the 2015 New USDA’s “AND JUSTICE FOR ALL” poster (10” x 17”) to all local WIC providers. The new non-discrimination statement in English and Spanish is printed on the same side. It is important to note that all local WIC providers are required to post the “AND JUSTICE FOR ALL” posters in a prominent location for all prospective and current program participants. On January 26, 2016, all WIC coordinators will receive an order link. Please place your order by February 9, 2016. SUBJECT 3: Breastfeeding Conference Save-The-Date. Joplin City WIC is hosting a free breastfeeding conference on March 18th. For this one day conference, Dr. Tamara Fusco MD, IBCLC, FAAP, FAMB and Dr. Kathy Leeper MD, IBCLC, FAAP, FAMB will be presenting on Best Practices for Lactation. This program has been submitted for approval for continuing education for physicians, dietitians, and lactation consultants. SUBJECT 4: Breastfeeding Coordinator Training. This is a reminder that there is a Breastfeeding Coordinator Training scheduled for April 12, 2016 in Jefferson City. This one-day session will cover the role of the Breastfeeding Coordinator, breastfeeding management, 3-Step Counseling, and guidelines for loaning breast pumps. This training will go beyond what is covered in the “Using Loving Support to Grow and Glow in WIC” training.

The training is mandatory for all new Breastfeeding Coordinators. Any other staff members who would like additional information on breastfeeding are welcome to attend. SUBJECT 5: From The WOM - Program Violations ER# 1.06200
Question: What are the mandatory participant sanctions that a State agency must impose?

Answer: CFR 246.12 requires State Agencies to establish procedures designed to control participant violations. Participant Violations means any intentional action of a participant, parent or caretaker of an infant or child participant, or proxy that violates Federal or State statutes, regulations, policies, or procedures governing the Program. Participant violations include intentionally making false or misleading statements or intentionally misrepresenting, concealing, or withholding facts to obtain benefits; exchanging cash-value-vouchers, food instruments, or supplemental foods for cash, credit, non-food items, or unauthorized food items, including supplemental foods in excess of those listed on the participant’s food instrument; threatening to harm or physically harming clinic, farmer or retailer staff; and dual participation. ER #1.06200 contains the complete list participant violations, as well as the sanctions for each.

The State agency must disqualify the participant for one year if the State agency:

An exception to the above sanctions may be granted if the State Agency receives full restitution or a repayment schedule is agreed upon. An exception may also be granted if the disqualification could result in a serious health risk to an infant or child.

When there is a participant violation, the State Agency provides the participant written notice and the right to a fair hearing.

SUBJECT 6: Joplin City WIC Retirement Reception. Joplin City WIC will be hosting a Retirement reception for Marilyn Runge on February 1st @ 3:30 at the Joplin WIC office, 321 E. 4th Street. Marilyn has been with WIC for 28 years.

SUBJECT 7: CEU Corner.
Don’t miss out on a new Oral Health Continuing Nutrition Education Opportunity: Healthy Smiles from the Start. This approximately 20-minute recorded webinar was a coordinated effort between the Missouri Dental Association (MDA) and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Oral Health Program to provide pre-and post-natal dental health care education for use in oral health education efforts. JOB POSTING: WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator/Nutritionist - St. Louis County Department of Public Health. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a full-time Breastfeeding Coordinator/Nutritionist in the WIC program. This position is responsible for overseeing the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) Program; developing breastfeeding (BF) goals/objectives for the Local Agency Plan and BFPC program; managing the breast pump loan program; conducting BF assessments and counseling; providing BF training to WIC, health center staff; and public health nurses; maintaining BF resource inventory; conducting BF outreach; and functioning as a WIC nutritionist, as necessary. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition, or a related field; including or supplemented by 15 semester hours in food and nutrition from a 4-year program. Must be an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or have other advanced training in lactation. Also requires two years of related experience, preferably in WIC.
