SUBJECT 7: Healthy Smiles from the Start Kit. Before the end of September, you will be receiving in the mail a Healthy Smiles from the Start kit, which includes a DVD with various resources and 100 brochures in English. The brochures are intended to be provided to each family you serve.

Healthy Smiles from the Start is a suite of patient education materials, developed by the American Dental Association (ADA), to help new parents understand the importance of oral health for pregnant women and babies. The Missouri Dental Association (MDA) is the state constituent of the ADA, and in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Oral Health Program and The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children is pleased to provide this new, multifaceted pre- and post-natal dental health care education program.

As you know from your experience, early childhood cavities are a significant public health problem. One-third of children aged 3 to 5 years have a cavity in at least one tooth. Research shows that when a mom’s mouth is healthy, her baby’s mouth is more likely to be healthy, too. That’s why it’s important for new parents to learn mouth healthy habits right from the start.

In addition to the materials being shipped, you can also download these materials at www.Modental.org/HealthySmiles and find other resources, such as recommendations for parents about fluoride, pacifiers and sip cups - as well as a link to RE-ORDER materials from the Oral Health Program, including Spanish brochures, if needed. Brochure re-orders are available at no charge.

State staff of the WIC program has met with both the Oral Health Program and the MDA, and we are pleased to be able to support this program and the great information it provides to help reinforce to your clients important oral health information for their child.

SUBJECT 8: Immunization Update. : Inactivating Document not reviewed and Document Not available: Effective October 1st 2014, MOWINS will be updated so that these two immunization options (Document not reviewed and Document not available) will not show in the dropdown list as a selection. Please note that if a dropdown selection in the participants record had one of the two options being inactivated, that field will show as a blank space in the participant’s record. Even though the record shows a blank space the data is still on the database behind the scenes. The LWP is required to update participant records to reflect the new status with the two allowable selections.
Provide a referral if the participant is not up to date to ensure that Missouri WIC is fulfilling the USDA requirement (Participant Referrals 1.01800 section B) of screening and providing referrals. If you have any questions please contact rose.sipakati@health.mo.gov.
