These awareness messages will be posted on Facebook.

One monthly email will be sent out announcing the monthly topic(s). You can help by forwarding the monthly announcement message to your contacts and encouraging them to visit the MODEC Facebook page.

MODEC Social Media Awareness Campaign - July Topics:
During the month of July, MODEC will promote the availability of Core DEC Training and will promote the creation of Local DEC Teams. Check them out on Facebook for awareness messages related to these important topics.

SUBJECT 2: Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration Report: Breastfeeding rates for the period ending 6/30/2014 are now available in Crystal Reports. The report is located in the “Breastfeeding/Breast Pumps” folder and includes data for the years 2012-2014. The year 2012 is the report for period ending 6/30/2012, year 2013 is for period ending 6/30/2013 and year 2014 is for period ending 6/30/2014.

Overall, the state has again seen a slight increase in breastfeeding rates for both initiation and duration. This is due to all the hard work of our local WIC providers in implementing best practices that support breastfeeding. Thank you for your dedication in assisting our moms in meeting their breastfeeding goals. If you have any questions about breastfeeding rates, please contact Kathy Mertzlufft at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or at 573-526-4792.

SUBJECT 3: Breast Pump Order: The state WIC office has funding to place an order for double pumping kits, Lactina Select multi-user electric breast pumps, Harmony manual breast pumps and Personal Double Electric single-user breast pumps. Single-user means that this pump is not meant to be shared with other women, so this pump will be given to mothers who meet the following criteria:

For each participant that is provided this pump, the Single User Personal Electric Breast Pump Agreement/Questionnaire (attached) must be completed. It is important that you promote this pump to prenatal women and use as an additional incentive to promote exclusive breastfeeding.

If you would like to request any of these items for your agency, please complete the attached order form and email to Jeannie.Phelps@health.mo.gov by COB on Friday, August 8, 2014. If you have any questions please contact Kathy Mertzlufft at 573-526-4792 or by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov. (TWO ATTACHMENTS)

SUBJECT 5: Save the Date - University of Minnesota National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course Seminar Telecast: Nutrition Education Opportunity: WIC Registered Dietitians, Nutritionists, and Public Health Nurses who serve pre-conceptual, pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women will want to take advantage of this full two-day National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course Seminar shown on November 20-21, 2014 in Jefferson City. This year's continuing education program focuses on Nutrition and Infant Mortality, FASD Identification & Treatment, Street Drug Use Among Pregnant Women, Baby-Led Weaning, Predictors of Obesity Among 4 Year Old Children, Nutrition, Neonatal Growth and Cognitive Development, Substance Use and Depression in Postpartum Women, and Nutrition, Obesity and Male Reproductive Health. This training is presented by the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health and will be shown by the WICNS’ Nutrition Training Institute. Please watch for registration form and additional details to be sent in a few weeks.

SUBJECT 6: Issuance of Formula from LWP Storage: Some local WIC agencies have a storage area where they store formula that is returned to the WIC clinic when the formula cannot be used by the WIC participant. When accepting unused unopened containers of formula, the LWP staff must check that there are no dented cans and that the formula expiration date is still good. When the formula is re-issued to another WIC participant, you must issue it through MOWINS via the Direct Ship selection. Do not just give the can(s) of formula to a WIC participant without issuing it in MOWINS. Please be extra cautious that you do not issue more formula than what is allowed for the month, this is over issuance and is against federal regulations.  Never replace formula or issue checks for an issuance period that has already expired. There is a MOWINS Hot Topics of December 2013 titled Direct Shipments & Extra Formula that will provide you additional information on this issue. The webinar can be reviewed at the following address: http://health.mo.gov/living/families/wic/mowins/index.php#gov
If you have questions, please contact your TA nutritionist.

SUBJECT 8: Missouri Receives Funding To Implement eWIC: USDA has announced that Missouri is one of the states awarded Technology Funds to pilot and implement an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) benefit delivery system. The EBT system will be called eWIC and will replace the paper Food Instruments. The news release can be found here http://www.fns.usda.gov/pressrelease/2014/fns-000314 This funding is for the statewide implementation of eWIC, including funding to enhance MOWINS to be EBT compatible.
