  1. Windows XP/Windows 7:  Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) staff has recently started the process of switching all LWP desktop computers and laptops that are currently running Windows XP operating system to the newer operating system, Windows 7.  The reason this is being done is that Microsoft will not support Windows XP after April 8, 2014.
LWP desktop computers and laptops that were installed in February 2013 and later are already running Windows 7.  ITSD staff will go to LWPs that have desktop computers and laptops with Windows XP to install Windows 7.  ITSD staff will contact LWPs and set up a time to do the Windows 7 installations.  It will likely take a few hours for each installation.
If you have questions, please contact Mark Davis at Mark.Davis@health.mo.gov or 573-526-5323 or 800-392-8209.

  2. New WIC Logo:  We are pleased to announce a new Missouri WIC logo.  We have already started putting it in WIC publications.  It is attached to this update (see attachments - jpg, pdf and png formats) and is also on our website, http://health.mo.gov/living/families/wic/wiclwp/publications.php for your use.  We appreciate the logo suggestions that were received from local and state staff throughout the past several months and used many of them in the creation of the Missouri WIC logo.

If you have questions, please contact Mark Davis at Mark.Davis@health.mo.gov or 573-526-5323 or 800-392-8209 (THREE ATTACHMENTS).

  3. Nutrition Assessment Initial Questions:  The Nutrition Assessment initial questions will have changes effective January 6, 2014.  Recognizing the challenges that some agencies are experiencing with the NA process in MOWINS, there is a committee of local and state agency staff addressing these challenges. Some LWPS asked that the NA have a Comments field in certain questions to allow more relevant answers from participants.  The committee has rearranged the order of the questions for a better flow of the assessment, there are more Comment boxes, and the placement of the water questions has been revised as well.  The Initial Questions will continue to auto assign risk factors as much as possible with the changes.

There will also be changes to the Follow-Up questions.  The Committee will begin addressing these changes so they can be implemented May 1, 2014.  If you have questions regarding the nutrition assessment changes, please send your question to the following address: nutritionservices@health.mo.gov.

  4. Program for Dietetic Interns:  Reminder - The Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI) is now taking applications for the 2014-2015 class year.  Up to four interns will be chosen from the pre-select option.  This is advantageous for eligible employees of local WIC providers.  The deadline for the pre-select option is Dec. 15th.  There is no fee for those interns who are employed by the MDHSS WIC program or employed by a Missouri Local WIC Provider.  A $3,000 fee applies to all other interns.  Be sure to use the application form, which is required (see attached).  The Dietetic Internship Recommendation form is also attached for your use.  For more information, visit our website.  If you have any questions, please contact Vicki Strickland at 800-392-8209 or vicki.strickland@health.mo.gov. (TWO ATTACHMENTS)

  5. Utilization of the 2014 National WIC Association (NWA) Calendar:  The State office purchased the 2014 NWA Calendars for WIC participants and local WIC staff as a nutrition education tool.  The theme of the 2014 calendar is “Time for Action”.  The calendar highlights the following information each month:

    • A 5-minute snack idea
    • A 10-minute physical activity for moms and children
    • A 20-minute recipe for a delicious dish

The NWA calendar is a nutrition education tool. Please utilize the calendar accordingly.
If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to contact Takako Tagami at takako.tagami@health.mo.gov.

  6. WIC Resource Order Forms - Important!:  The following three forms are available to order WIC resource items from the DHSS warehouse:

    • WIC Nutrition Education Resource Request Form (WIC 7)
    • WIC Resource Request Form (WIC 8)
    • WIC Breastfeeding Resource Request Form (WIC 9) New!

Please share the attached forms with all your staff.  The forms are also available through the WIC website.  If you have any questions and/or suggestions, please feel free to contact takako.tagami@health.mo.gov. (THREE ATTACHMENTS)

  7. New Rabies Awareness Posters and Bulletin Board Displays Available:  The Office of Veterinary Public Health has developed new resources (e-cards, posters, and bulletin board displays) to help WIC participants be more aware of facts about rabies.  Please order new posters here entitled Vaccinate Your Pets #1102 and Avoid Wild Animals #1103.  Make your WIC families more aware of the danger of rabies to themselves and their pets, and the threat of exposure from wild animals.

Rabies is a dangerous virus that anyone can get if they are bitten by an animal that has the disease.  Protect yourself and your family from rabies by avoiding wild animals and ensuring pets are currently vaccinated.  Rabies is a year-round threat in Missouri. Surveillance data for 2013 indicate a 30 percent increase in total rabid animals detected statewide compared to the previous two years.  In addition, while for most years one or two rabid domestic animals might be detected, in 2013 six domestic animals have tested positive for rabies (three dogs, two cats, and one horse).

For additional information, please feel free to contact Alyce Turner, Alyce.Turner@health.mo.gov, in the Office of Veterinary Public Health.

    8.  FFY 2013 End-of-Year Invoicing due December 10, 2013:  The deadline for submission of FFY 2013 end-of-year invoices is Monday, December 10, 2013. Expenses must have been incurred prior to October 1, 2013 to qualify for the FFY 2013 funding year. The grant year will close the end of December and payments beyond this date are not possible.
SUPPLEMENTAL Invoice due 12-10-2013 - ABSOLUTE DEADLINE
