Section 231 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, Public Law 111-296, requires that USDA establish a program to recognize WIC local agencies and clinics that demonstrate exemplary breastfeeding promotion and support activities. The intent of this program is to provide models and motivate other local agencies and clinics to strengthen their breastfeeding promotion and support activities and ultimately increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates among WIC participants.

The comment period is open for 60 days. Comments may be submitted using the Federal eRulemaking Portal: http://www.regulations.gov, or by mail to Debra R. Whitford, Director, Supplemental Food Programs Division, FNS, USDA, 3101 Park Center Drive, Room 520, Alexandria, VA 22302. All comments must be received on or before May 7, 2013. You can access the notice and submit your comments at: http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=FNS-2013-0014-0001.

You will find information regarding WIC's role in immunization in the Referral Policy highlighted in yellow. LWPs will continue to provide screening and referral as a standard part of the WIC Certification process. Encourage and remind participants to bring their immunization records to the clinic for review. Continue to use the hardcopy shot records and the ShowMeVax registry to screen for participant immunization status. Please use the contact information below when LWP's have participant immunization records that need to be updated in ShowMeVax and the LWP does not have staff to update the record within the agency. Send or fax a legible copy of record which should include Name, Date of Birth, DCN number if available to:
