Safe Sleep Guidelines: Since the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended all babies should be placed on their backs to sleep in 1992, deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) have dramatically decreased. Unfortunately, infant deaths caused by unsafe sleep environments have increased. The state WIC office would like to remind all local WIC agencies, when providing education on infant sleeping, to follow the safe sleep guidelines provided by the AAP. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services provides information on safe sleep at on their website. At the bottom of the web page is information from the AAP, links to other safe sleep and SIDS websites, brochures available in the MO DHSS warehouse and a Safe Sleep and Shaken Baby video. If participants have additional questions, please refer them to their healthcare provider.

The purpose of this statewide effort is to implement evidence-based breastfeeding strategies to encourage and recognize local WIC providers that offer an optimal level of breastfeeding support. Many of these agencies had already implemented these strategies and have served as a model for developing the criteria for awarding the “Breastfeeding Friendly WIC Clinic” designation. Their success is being observed through increased breastfeeding rates.
If your agency needs guidance on ways to implement the Breastfeeding Friendly WIC Clinic Criteria, please contact the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, Kathy Mertzlufft at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-526-4792.WIC Positions
