- World Breastfeeding Week Promotion: August 1-7 is designated each year as World Breastfeeding Week by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and the entire month of August is designated Missouri Breastfeeding Month. The theme for this year is “Breastfeeding, Not All Things Change”. The objective of this year’s theme is to illustrate that trends and technology have changed over time, but breast milk is still the same, perfect food for babies.
The Bureau of Genetics and Healthy Childhood and the Office of Public Information have developed a new educational poster and a retractable badge holder that can be ordered through the MO DHSS warehouse. Go to http://health.mo.gov/warehouse/e-l-ghc.html for more information. The poster features a Missouri Breastfeeding mom and a sample is attached for you to preview before ordering. The poster is catalog #263 and the name badge holder is catalog #266.
For additional ideas for World Breastfeeding Week, please see the attached suggested promotion activities from the National WIC Association. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Mertzlufft by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-526-4792. (TWO ATTACHMENTS)
Breastfeeding Report: The current breastfeeding initiation and duration report for the period ending 6/30/2012 is located on Crystal Reports. The selection of data for this report was done differently than in the past. The change in calculation is based on the way CDC selects data for the Pediatric Nutrition Surveillance System (PedNSS).
Below is how the data was selected for both initiation and duration:
- Initiation: Selected infants that were born during the reporting period.
- BF at 1 month: Selected infants that turned one month of age during the reporting period.
- BF at 3 months: Selected infants that turned three months of age during the reporting period.
- BF at 6 months: Selected infants that turned six months of age during the reporting period.
- BF at 12 months: Selected infants that turned twelve months of age during the reporting period.
After the 2011 PedNSS report is published, CDC will no longer provide this data. By calculating the data in the same manner as CDC this will allow Missouri to continue comparing breastfeeding rates to other states that use the same method. According to the current breastfeeding report, Missouri WIC is showing substantial increases in both initiation and duration, which may in part be due to the new method of calculation.
The state WIC office would like to thank all our local WIC agencies for their breastfeeding promotion and support efforts. This report shows that all the hard work at the local level is paying off. If you have any questions about the report please contact Kathy Mertzlufft by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by phone at 573-526-4792.
Mandatory New and Revised Nutrition Risk Criteria Training: New and Revised WIC Nutrition Risk Criteria Training will be provided through a pre-recorded Webinar which will be available this fall. The purpose of the training is to provide the certifying staff (WIC Certifier, CPA/Nutritionist) with information on new and revised risk factors based on the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Growth Charts for Children Aged 0-59 Months. One hour of Continuing Nutrition Education (CNE) will be offered for completing this training.
Prior to implementation, and after the release of the mandatory training, the state office has scheduled conference calls, listed below, which will allow LWPs to ask questions regarding the information provided. These conference calls are optional.
