  1. Classifying Employees: Some WIC agencies classify peer counselors and other WIC staff as independent contractors. It is very important that local WIC agencies work with their human resource staff to insure that these employees are classified correctly. For more information on worker misclassification please visit the website labor.mo.gov/offthebooks/. WIC is unable to advise compliance with labor laws in a particular situation. You will need to consult your agency human resource staff or your labor law advisor.

  2. Shipment Notice - National WIC Association’s (NWA) 2012 Calendars: The DHSS warehouse will begin shipping the 2012 NWA calendars to local WIC providers during the week of October 3, 2011. If your agency does not receive the calendars by October 20, 2011, please contact Takako Tagami at Takako.tagami@health.mo.gov.

  3. Food Day Celebration: The National WIC Association (NWA) is an official sponsor of the Food Day celebration taking place on October 24, 2011, which will include activities and events that emphasize healthy eating in a sustainable manner. For WIC specific action ideas to help in your celebrations, NWA provides suggestions at http://www.nwica.org/sites/default/files/Fooddayfinal.pdf. To find out what events are planned in your area, go to http://www.foodday.org/participate/events/page/11 (and page 12). The state WIC office plans to eat real on Food Day by enjoying a Healthy Snack Day. We’ll follow the principle of “Reducing Diet Related Disease by Promoting Healthy Food.” Familiar guidance from this principle is to “Plan snacks and meals around fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and yogurt, fish, and lean poultry. Use one of those cookbooks on your shelf to try out a new, healthy recipe. If you fill up on the good stuff, you won't be tempted so much by the bad.” Happy Food Day.

  4. State Staff Changes: There have been a couple of staff changes at the state WIC office. Lyn Konstant has taken a new position as Administrator for the Section of WIC and Community Nutrition Services. Programs in this section include: WIC, program for dietetic interns, breastfeeding peer counseling, child and adult care food program, commodity supplemental food program, summer food service program and Eat Smart.

We are pleased to announce that Lisa Brown has accepted the position of WICNS bureau chief and Missouri WIC Director. Ms. Brown comes to us from SERVE Inc. in Fulton, a nonprofit organization that operates eight programs. Ms. Brown was the executive director and responsible for managing a staff of 20 and over 400 volunteers. She successfully turned around an organization that was on the brink of folding when she took the job.

Lisa has dual BA degrees in psychology and sociology from Drury University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She has owned her own business and worked as an associate attorney in a law office in St. Louis and as a juvenile office attorney in Greene County. Lisa will start Monday, September 26. Please join me in welcoming her to the wonderful world of WIC.

Jeannie Phelps has taken a Health Program Representative I/II position in the Customer Service Unit. Jeannie will be testing MOWINS in the production environment and testing/tracking on issues that local agencies are having. She will work on the help desk from time to time. Previously Jeannie worked in the WIC vendor unit as a Senior Office Support Assistant.

Jason Seehusen has taken a promotion to the position of Senior Office Support Assistant (position vacated by Jeannie Phelps) in the WIC vendor unit. If you have vendor questions, you may have the opportunity to talk with Jason.

We will be updating the WIC picture directory in the near future.
