WIC Works Webinar - Breastfeeding Breakthroughs: WIC Works is hosting a free webinar titled, “Breastfeeding Breakthroughs” on Tuesday, November 15th, 1:00-2:00 pm (CST). This webinar will explore exciting new research showing dramatic improvements in the rates and duration of exclusive breastfeeding among California WIC moms and what WIC policy reforms led to this critical breakthrough. You will also learn how increasing breastfeeding can actually turn the tide to childhood obesity. Dr. Shannon Whaley, Research Director, PHFE WIC Program, Los Angeles and Laurie True, Executive Director, California WIC Association are the speakers. Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/837013098.
Reminder - Program for Dietetic Interns: The Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI) is now taking applications for the 2012-2013 class-years. Up to four interns will be chosen from the pre-select option. This is advantageous for employees of LWPs who are eligible to participate in the pre-select option. The deadline for the pre-select option is Dec. 15th. There is no fee for those interns who are employed by the MDHSS WIC program or employed by a Missouri Local WIC Provider. A $3,000 fee applies to all other interns. Be sure to use the "new" application form, which is required (see attached). The Dietetic Internship Recommendation form is also attached for your use. For more information, visit our website. If you have any questions, please contact Vicki Strickland at 800-392-8209 or Vicki.Strickland@health.mo.gov.(TWO ATTACHMENTS)
Availability of the Missouri WIC Approved Infant Food Lists (English & Spanish): The Missouri WIC Approved Infant Food Lists (#1232 & #1233) are available at the DHSS warehouse. Please begin ordering using the WIC 8 form as needed. The WIC 8 form is available through the link below:
http://health.mo.gov/living/families/wic/wiclwp/forms.php If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.
Extra National WIC Association’s (NWA) 2012 Calendars: The State office has extra WIC calendars. If your agency is interested in receiving additional calendars, please complete the order request by November 16, 2011. Local WIC Coordinators will receive an e-mail message with a link to the order request on November 2, 2011. If you have any questions, please contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.
Photoconductor Kits for MICR Printers: The ST-9512 printer (small MICR printer) used for printing WIC checks has a photoconductor kit that has to be periodically replaced. Typically the kit will have to be replaced after the toner cartridge on the printer has been replaced 2-4 times. The photoconductor kit can be accessed by opening the front door of the printer. Depress the button on the left side of the printer to open the door. The kit is a black frame that the toner cartridge sets on. After you open the printer front door, you will see the label of the photoconductor kit with the part number 24B1423.
Once the photoconductor unit reaches approximately 85% of it usable life, the printer will stop and Toner Low / Replace PC button (see page 24 of attached manual for location of button) will be blinking. Press Continue (see page 24 of attached manual for location of button) and the printer returns to Ready and printing will continue. This early warning is intended for scheduling and obtaining a new unit for replacement in the near future. At this time you should contact Peggy Maupin at Peggy.Maupin@health.mo.gov or 573-522-9147 or 800-392-8209 to have a photo conductor kit sent to you. You may contact Peggy if you have questions. You can view more information about the photoconductor kit on pages 25-27 of the attached manual.
The ST-9612 (newer version of the small MICR printer that some local agencies have recently received) also has a photoconductor kit that has to be replaced periodically. The local agencies that have this printer have not had it long enough to need the photoconductor kit replaced. We will send information on this kit in the near future.
The ST-9530 (large MICR printer) does not have a photoconductor kit. (ONE ATTACHMENT)

What’s New in 2012? e-Learning!: We are currently working on a project to change much of the training for local WIC providers (LWP) from being in-person to being done via webinars using advanced software we recently purchased that will make the webinars more user friendly. We will evaluate each training to determine which parts can be done by webinar. We plan to start this new way of doing training on October 1, 2012. This change will require local WIC providers to have a training coordinator. This will not require another staff person but will be a duty that an existing staff person will need to do. The registrations and training records for e-Learning training will be done electronically using specialized software. Because of this, all WIC staff will need to have their own email address. The advantage to doing training by webinar is that staff will not need to come to Jefferson City or to district sites, saving staff time and travel expenses. In the coming weeks, we will provide more information as we continue work on this project.
If you have questions, please contact Mark Davis at Mark.Davis@dhss.mo.gov or 573-526-5323 or 800-392-8209.
