Nutrition Education Topics in MOWINS: Please see the changes that have been made to the Nutrition Education topics in MOWINS to provide a more complete listing from which to choose. There are 3 different types of nutrition education contacts that can be used to document nutrition education provided to participants as listed below in MOWINS.
- Individual Primary Nutrition Education Contacts are those which are selected/provided at cert and recert. Under Individual Primary Nutrition Education Contact, in MOWINS you will see the removal/deletion of certain topics (e.g., converted from old system, immunization, etc.)
- Individual Secondary Nutrition Education Contacts are those which are selected/provided at subsequent visits. In MOWINS, you will see the addition of several topics in the ‘individual secondary nutrition education’.
- Secondary Group Nutrition Education Contacts are those which are selected/provided at subsequent visits in a group setting. In MOWINS you will see the addition of several topics in the ‘secondary group nutrition education’.
Attached are the revised listings of nutrition education topics for each participant category that are available for selection. If you have questions, please contact Vicki Strickland at Vicki.Strickland@health.mo.gov or 573-526-7961.

Education to WIC Participants on WIC Food Purchases: In our continual efforts to have good working relationships between the WIC participants and the WIC vendors, it is very important that the Local WIC Provider staff educate the participants on how to redeem their checks at the grocery store. When we survey the WIC Vendors, they say the major issue that vendors have relate to the training of participants. The vendors believe that the participants are not properly informed about the types of approved foods or how to properly assist the vendors in having a successful WIC transaction. Treating each other with courtesy and respect goes a long way with both participant and vendor staff. We have 3 excellent education resources: the WIC ID folder, the Missouri WIC Approved Food List and the Power Point Presentation for Redemption of Check (below) which is at the WICLWP website.
PowerPoint Presentation for Redemption of Checks-Local-WIC Providers are required to provide participants with a complete explanation of how to redeem food instruments. By using the Redemption PowerPoint presentation local WIC providers can be assured all components of the required information will be presented to the WIC participant. The Redemption of Checks PowerPoint contains colored slides which are designed to be used electronically or printed (flipchart). If you have questions about this, please discuss them with your TA staff.
Program for Dietetic Interns Reminder: The Program for Dietetic Interns (PDI) is now taking applications for the 2011-2012 class-year. Up to four interns will be selected from the pre-select option. This is advantageous for employees of LWPs who are eligible to participate in the pre-select option. The deadline for the pre-select option is Dec. 15th. There is no fee for those interns who are employed by the MDHSS WIC program or employed by a Missouri Local WIC Provider. A $3,000 fee applies to all other interns. Be sure to use the "new" application form, which is required (see attached). The Dietetic Internship Recommendation form is also attached for your use. For more information, visit our website.
