  1. Certified Breastfeeding Educator Training (CBE):  The University of Missouri Health System/Columbia Regional Hospital is in the process of planning a "Certified Breastfeeding Educator" course, taught by Debi Bocar, in Columbia.  They hope to open this to WIC and plan to charge around $200 for the 2 1/2 day course taking place April 23, 24, & 25.  In order to determine how many people from WIC may be interested, so a training site can be chosen large enough for all those wanting to attend, we are asking that you contact Susan Henry-Schwendinger at henryss@health.missouri.edu to let her know if you or someone at your agency would like to attend this training.  This does not register you for the training and is for only determining interest.  A registration form will be sent out at a later date.

  2. The Missouri WIC Approved Food List (Effective October 1, 2009 – September 30, 2011) begins October 1.  If the participant has WIC checks for September, October and November (tri-monthly) they must still begin using the Missouri WIC Approved Food List (Effective October 1, 2009 – September 30, 2011) on October 1.

Some juice such as Old Orchard juice is not allowed on the Missouri WIC Approved Food List (Effective October 1, 2009 – September 30, 2011).  Thus the participant cannot get Old Orchard juice beginning October 1.  The checks for October and November for a child allows 4 46/12/11.5 ounce juice Approved Types/Sizes.  The child can get these 4 46/12/11.5  sizes of juice, but they cannot select the Old Orchard because it is not an approved juice starting October 1, 2009.

  3. Food and Formula Reference Guide (FFRG) – Effective October 1, 2009:  Attached is the FFRG, which is effective October 1, 2009.  Please share the FFRG with your staff.   If you have any suggestions and/or questions, please feel free to contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.

  4. Risk Factor 428 – Dietary Risk Associated with Complementary Feeding Practices:  The state WIC office has received several questions from local WIC providers regarding when to assign risk factor 428-Dietary Risk Associated with Complementary Feeding Practices.  This risk factor is considered a presumptive risk factor and is manually assigned by the CPA.  All infants 4 to11 months and children 12 to 23 months of age shall be assigned risk factor 428.  If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact your district technical assistance (TA) team.

  5. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU):  As staff who works with WIC clients, you educate participants and guardians that the food benefits received from the WIC program must be consumed by the participant to whom they are issued.  For some homeless individuals or families temporarily residing in shelters, that guidance may be difficult to follow.  Some shelters have communal food storage, and lines are blurred when it comes to who consumes which foods.  Section 246.7(m) of the federal regulations that guide the WIC Program states that institutions cannot receive benefits from an individual’s participation in the WIC program.  Local WIC Providers must work with these types of institutions to create an agreement to ensure WIC participants consume WIC foods.  WIC Operations Manual policy ER# 2.05200, Serving Homeless Persons, was revised and shared with the Policy List posted on August 17, 2009.  In addition, the state WIC office has developed the attached template for a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the LWP to enter into with local shelters and similar institutions to document the agreement and both parties’ understanding of the policy.  Please contact your district Technical Assistance (TA) staff if you have any questions.

  6. Corrected Pictorial Missouri WIC New Food Packages Samples:Pictorial sample food packages were introduced through the WIC Update (September 14, 2009).  There was an error in the infant fully breastfeeding food package.  Please use the corrected samples to introduce new food packages to participants.  If you have any suggestions and/or questions, please contact Takako Tagami at Takako.Tagami@health.mo.gov.

  7. Fun on the Run activity booklet:  The National WIC Association is making a special offer to Local WIC Providers.  You may receive complimentary copies of the Raising Readers Fun on the Run activity booklet developed in partnership with PBS Kids and Parenting Magazine.  This 13-page bilingual booklet focuses on building reading skills.  It includes fun activities that engage WIC moms in helping their children learn and develop reading skills.  To request copies of this booklet, you may view and order the publication at http://parentingextras.com/raisingreaders/.  The minimum order is 200 copies.  Please contact your district Technical Assistance (TA) staff if you have any questions.

  8. Educational Opportunity:  The American Dietetic Association and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ Nutrition Training Institute (NTI) will present the teleseminar, The Promise of Nutritional Genomics:  Implications for Research, Practice and Policy, in Jefferson City on Wednesday, November 18, 2009.  This teleseminar will explain nutritional genomics concepts using research examples and explore the clinical applications, implications and caveats for dietetic practice.  Please see the attached site registration form for details or contact Michelle Nienhuis at Michelle.Nienhuis@health.mo.gov with questions.
