  1. WIC State Staff Comings and Goings:  There’s a new voice on the main phone for the State WIC Office.  Susan Guerrant began work on July 21 as the Office Support Assistant in the Customer Service Unit.  Among her other duties, Susan will do registrations for HANDS (and eventually MOWINS) and LAP training.  Please welcome Susan to WIC!  Glenn Studebaker, WIC Communication and Planning Coordinator recently left WIC.  His last day was July 25.  Glenn worked in WIC for 10 years and made many important contributions to WIC.  He did LAP and WIC Coordinator training, answered questions from participants and LWPs regarding policy and procedures, provided administrative technical assistance to 12 agencies in the Northeast District and much more.  Glenn will be sorely missed.  Please wish Glenn the best as he moves on to be the Diabetes Prevention and Control program manager in the Bureau of Cancer and Chronic Disease Control.

  2. MOWINS News Icon on WIC Updates Site:  We recently added a MOWINS News icon on the WIC Updates site.  This icon will be the repository for all information regarding MOWINS.  It currently has information on pre-training conference calls and the pilot and roll out schedule.  We will put more information on the icon in the near future.

  3. WIC-24 Online Invoice Training:  WIC-24 online invoice training dates have been scheduled.  The training will be similar to the LAP training using laptop computers.  We are excited about this new online WIC tool.  We have planned two 2-hour trainings each day at the dates and locations below:  (The morning training will be repeated in the afternoon.)

  4. Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training:  "Loving Support Through Peer Counseling" training is scheduled at 4 regional sites in October and November.  This is a mandatory training for new peer counselors, but we have had an interest in other WIC staff wanting to attend.  This training is on basic breastfeeding and counseling skills, using 3 Step Counseling, and is similar to the Breastfeeding Coordinator training.  Only staff that has never attended a State WIC breastfeeding training would benefit from attending.  To register for this training, please complete the attached registration form and email to or fax to 573-526-1470.

  5. Cheese Description Change: Effective September 1, 2008, the Missouri WIC program will approve two sizes of cheese (8 oz and 16 oz).  The 32-oz cheese will no longer be approved as of October 1, 2008.

    Checks printed in August will read “CHEESE - STORE BRAND/GENERIC”.
    Checks printed in September will read “CHEESE-STORE BRAND 8-16 OZ SIZE ”.

    Participants may purchase either one 16-ounce cheese package or two 8-ounce cheese packages at WIC vendors according to the description written on their checks.  Please share this change with your staff and advise your participants.  If you have any questions, please contact Takako Tagami at

  6. Spending Down End of Year Money:  Do you have money remaining in your budget as we approach the end of FY08?  How can you use these funds to effectively communicate nutrition messages to your WIC participants?  A suggestion is to provide a copy of the beautiful new full color cookbook, Let’s Cook with Fruits & Vegetables: Vamos a Cocinar con Frutas y Verduras, to every WIC family.

    This cookbook, on display at the recent National WIC Association Conference, includes over 60 simple recipes in English and Spanish, some from WIC participants.  Many include WIC authorized foods, such as the Pineapple Smoothie, Split Pea Soup, and Cheesy Vegetables.  Many more recipes include foods that will be on the new Missouri food list in FY 2010, such as Tofu Dip, Barley Vegetable Medley, Fruit and Yogurt Parfait, Vegetable Burrito with whole-wheat tortillas, and Baked Sweet Potato Fries.  A 30 book minimum order will cost about $100.  Ordering information is attached.  Contact Rita Arni at or at 573.751.8159 with questions.

  7. New Nutrition Education Handout:  The WIC State office developed a new nutrition education handout titled:  “Relief from Common Problems of Pregnancy" (#51).  This handout is designed to provide information about some of the most common complaints during pregnancy, such as nausea and vomiting, heartburn, and constipation.  It also provides women with specific remedies to minimize the discomfort and complaints.  This handout (English version) is being printed and will be available at the DHSS warehouse in 3-4 weeks.  It is also being translated into 11 languages.  We will notify you when they are available.  If you have any suggestions and/or questions, please contact Takako Tagami at

  8. Translated Version of WIC Approved Food List:  The Missouri WIC Approved Food List is being translated into various languages.  The following are available in PDF this week: 1) Bosnian version, 2) Russian version, and 3) Ukrainian version.  Please feel free to make copies as needed.  The WIC food list in these languages will not be available at the DHSS warehouse.  If you have any suggestions or questions, please contact Takako Tagami at

  9. Fit WIC Missouri Evaluation: We are nearing the end of our second year of statewide implementation of Fit WIC Missouri, a program to prevent childhood overweight in the WIC community.  Sixty nine percent of local WIC providers wrote a Fit WIC MO goal, objective, or strategy in the FY08 LAP, compared to 53% in FY07.  Congratulations to the Eastern District who had the highest agency participation rate at 100%.

    Each local WIC provider that participated in Fit WIC MO in FY08 is asked to complete the attached Evaluation (Table 8).  Any agency that wrote a goal, objective, strategy or activity in the FY08 LAP should complete the evaluation.  On the attached form, simply check the nutrition and physical activity goals that your agency selected in FY08, report how many participants selected each goal and how many were successful at making the behavior change.  Then check which activity to support WIC staff or which community activity your agency selected and give a brief report of the results.  A few open-ended questions give you the opportunity to tell us what is working well for you and what barriers you are experiencing as you implement Fit WIC MO.  Return this electronically to Rita Arni at no later than September 30, 2008.

  10. Tuna Can Size Change:  Several manufacturers have notified the WIC State office that they are changing the tuna can-size from 6 oz to 5 oz.  Therefore, the description of tuna in the HANDS system has been revised to allow participants to purchase tuna in 5-oz cans or in 6-oz cans.  Below is the new description for tuna effective August 12, 2008:
