  1. Save the Date for Current Practices in Breastfeeding and Infant Sleep Positioning: A Guide For Education of Prenatal and Postpartum Women to be held on September 12 and 13, 2006. Amy Spangler RN, MN, IBCLC will be presenting September the 12th on breastfeeding. Dr. Jack Kemp will be presenting September 13 on safe sleep for infants. Participants will have the option of registering for either one or two days. This conference will be free of charge and will be held at the Governors Office Building in Jefferson City. A conference brochure will be sent out in July.
  2. World Breastfeeding Week Promotion Materials: August 1-7 is designated each year as World Breastfeeding Week by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). In Missouri, we will celebrate breastfeeding the entire month of August, with the theme “Babies Were Born To Be Breastfed”. Please see the attached cover letter for more information. For promoting breastfeeding activities in your community, enclosed is a sample news release, sample breastfeeding proclamation, promotion activities idea list, and “All Mammals Drink Milk” coloring sheets. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will be sending a promotion packet to each LWP with retractable name badge holders, with this years theme for WIC staff to wear, and “Breastfeeding Benefits” note cards, to be used as an educational teaching tool with participants. Your promotion packet should arrive the third week of July. Please email the state contacts below if you need additional quantities for community outreach. You may also order breastfeeding literature and posters from the warehouse.   3. Have you registered for the Cultural Competency 101 training? If not, please see the attached brochure.
    The training will be held at six locations in July and September. This training is designed to introduce the concept of cultural competence and promote self-awareness, while helping people understand and respect cultural and ethnic differences. Various resources and tools for promoting cultural competence will be available. All WIC staff members including Clerks, HPAs, CPAs, Administrators, WIC Coordinators, WIC Nutrition Coordinators, Breastfeeding Coordinators, and WIC Vendor Coordinators are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop. Vendor Coordinators are encouraged to contact local WIC vendors and invite them to attend. This training opportunity will be included in the Missouri Grocers Association (MGA) newsletter. The registration brochure also will be available on DHSS website. Please do not miss this great learning opportunity! Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Applications - The state WIC office was experiencing intermittent problems with the main fax number last week and would like to verify that all Breastfeeding Peer Counselor applications were received. Please see the attached list. If you submitted an application and your agency is not listed, please resubmit your application by Wednesday, June 21, 2006 to Kathy Mertzlufft by email at Kathy.Mertzlufft@health.mo.gov or by fax at 573-526-1470.
